Chapter 5 - THE SUNSET PANIC

The sun was beginning to dip below the city skyline, painting the high-rise windows in a deep, bloody crimson light. Emma sat on her apartment balcony, a quiet breeze lifting the dark strands of her hair. She held her personal phone in her lap, watching the screen block out the fading light.

At exactly 5:12 PM, the silence of her evening was shattered.

The phone began to ring, the caller ID flashing with her father’s name. Emma let it ring until it drifted into voicemail. Two seconds later, it began to ring again. This time it was Marlene. Then Celeste. The calls were coming in a frantic, uncoordinated sequence, a digital chorus of absolute desperation.

Inside the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, the fairy tale had completely devolved into a horror movie. The open bar had been abruptly shut down by the hotel management because the corporate credit cards presented by Thomas Vance had been declined with a "Restricted Account" error code. The grand ice sculptures were melting into puddles on the linen tablecloths, and the high-society guests were whispering frantically as three corporate attorneys in dark suits walked straight onto the dance floor to confront Daniel and the Vance family.

Celeste was on her knees in the middle of the ballroom floor, her pristine lace wedding gown staining against the spilled champagne, her hands shaking as she held her phone to her ear, listening to the continuous ringing of Emma’s line.

"Pick up, pick up, pick up!" Celeste sobbed, her theatrical tears finally turning into real, unadulterated panic. "Emma, please! The police are here! Daniel’s family is threatening to annul the marriage! Father is having a heart attack! Emma!"

Beside her, Marlene was screaming at a hotel manager, her diamond bracelets flashing wildly as she waved a piece of paper that had been pulled from the ivory envelope. Her face was no longer elegant; it was a contorted mask of pure terror as she realized that every single dollar she had secretly stolen had been traced, frozen, and redirected to an escrow account controlled entirely by Emma’s forensic firm.

Emma stood up from her balcony chair, looking out at the crimson horizon. She didn't feel hatred. She didn't feel a need for petty revenge. She simply felt the clean, cold clarity of a woman who had refused to kneel on a marble floor to protect a house built entirely out of lies. She clicked her phone to silent, slid it into her pocket, and walked inside, leaving her family to drown in the beautiful, roaring fire they had built for themselves.
