Chapter 6 - THE BALLROOM RECKONING

The crimson light of the setting sun bled through the towering arched windows of the Plaza Hotel, illuminating a scene of absolute, chaotic ruin. The high-society guests who had been sipping champagne minutes prior were now backing away toward the exits, their whispers rising like a dark hiss. The grand jazz band had abruptly stopped playing, their instruments muted as three corporate attorneys, flanked by two plainclothes investigators, moved decisively across the polished dance floor.

Celeste stood near the center of the room, her hands clawing at the lace fabric of her gown. Her breathing came in shallow, frantic gasps.

"Daniel, please, tell them this is a mistake!" she begged, reaching for her husband's arm. "It’s Emma. She’s doing this to hurt me because she’s jealous! You know how unstable she is!"

Daniel didn't move. He stood perfectly still, his hands shoved deep into his tuxedo pockets, his eyes locked on the document the lead attorney had just handed him. His sharp jawline tightened, a vein pulsing near his temple. He slowly looked up, his gaze cutting through Celeste like a sheet of ice.

"The federal injunction doesn't care about jealousy, Celeste," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a cold, dangerous baritone that made the bridesmaids step back in terror. "This is a certified audit from the regulatory commission. Four million dollars. Transferred directly from my company’s pre-merger account into a shell entity called Marigold Holdings. And your signature is right next to your mother's."

Marlene pushed her way through the circle of security guards, her metallic champagne dress rustling aggressively. Her styled updo was beginning to fray, strands of blonde hair clinging to her damp, panicked face. Her diamond bracelets flashed wildly as she pointed an accusing finger at the lead investigator.

"You have no right to disrupt this event!" Marlene skyrocketed her voice, her tone cracking with a desperate, vicious rage. "My husband is Thomas Vance! We own the largest real estate firm in the valley! This is a private family matter!"

"It became a federal matter the moment you committed corporate espionage and interstate wire fraud, Mrs. Vance," the investigator replied calmly, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his leather belt. "The Vance real estate assets are currently being frozen under an emergency seizure warrant. Your empire doesn't exist anymore."

Thomas Vance stood just a few feet away, his face transitioning from a bright, wine-flushed red to a terrifying, bloodless gray. He clutched his left arm, his chest heaving as the absolute reality of his total financial and social execution crashed down on him. He looked at the daughter he had spent a lifetime spoiling, then at the wife he had blindly protected, realizing with a crushing weight that the woman they had slapped and humiliated at the church doors was the only one who had tried to save them from themselves.
