Chapter 15: A New Life

Six months later, life had settled into a new rhythm.
Vittorio had stepped back from many of his dangerous businesses. He kept enough to maintain power and protection, but he no longer lived as recklessly as before. Most of his time was now spent at home with Sophia.
The little girl had adjusted well. She was back in school, making friends, and slowly becoming the bright, talkative child she was always meant to be. Though she still had moments where she missed her mother, she no longer carried the same sadness in her eyes.
Renzo stayed on as Sophia’s personal bodyguard and gardener. Vittorio had given him a proper house near the new villa and made sure he was well compensated. Though their relationship remained professional on the surface, there was a quiet respect between the two men.
One warm evening, Vittorio sat on the terrace with a glass of wine while Sophia played in the garden with Renzo. Rosa came out and sat beside him.
“She’s happy,” Rosa said softly.
Vittorio nodded.
“She is.”
Rosa looked at him.
“And you? Are you happy?”
Vittorio thought about it.
He had lost his wife, his brother, and much of his old empire. But for the first time in many years, he didn’t feel empty.
He looked at Sophia laughing in the garden and answered honestly.
“I’m getting there.”
Rosa smiled gently.
“You’ve become a good father to her.”
Vittorio was quiet for a moment, then said, “I’m trying. That’s all I can do.”
As the sun began to set, Sophia ran over to them, out of breath and smiling.
“Papa! Can we go to the beach tomorrow?”
Vittorio looked at her and smiled — a real, warm smile.
“Sure,” he said. “We can go tomorrow.”
Sophia cheered and ran back to play.
Vittorio watched her go, then looked out at the horizon.
He had spent most of his life surrounded by power, fear, and betrayal.
But now, sitting here with the sound of a child’s laughter in the background, he realized something important.
This — this simple, quiet life — was what he had been missing all along.
