Chapter 10 - The Architect of Her Own Fate

Ten Years Later.
The campus of MIT was bathed in crisp autumn sunlight.
Maya Vance, now eighteen years old, sat at a long wooden table in the university library, her fingers flying across a laptop keyboard. She was running complex predictive algorithms, mapping out cyber-security vulnerabilities for major financial institutions.
Her mind, once used to notice mismatched frosting and heavy boots, was now analyzing billions of data points a second.
She wore a sleek leather jacket, her dark hair pulled back. She was no longer the frightened little girl in an oversized, flour-dusted apron. She was confident, sharp, and utterly brilliant.
Her phone buzzed on the table.
It was an encrypted message from an unknown number.
Happy 18th Birthday, Maya. The trust has been fully unlocked. Use it well. — R.S.
Maya smiled, a slow, knowing smile.
She reached into her leather jacket and pulled out a heavy, solid gold coin embossed with a double-headed eagle. She flipped it in her hands, the metal catching the library lights.
She had never needed to use the coin. Roman’s protection had been absolute. She and her mother had lived a beautiful, peaceful life on the West Coast, completely untouched by the darkness of the underworld.
But as Maya looked at the complex code scrolling across her screen, a thought crossed her mind. The Volkov syndicate was still out there, hiding in the shadows, waiting for a chance to strike back at the man who had protected her.
Maya tapped a few keys, opening a highly illegal, heavily encrypted backdoor terminal into the dark web. She began running a trace on Volkov offshore accounts, mapping their digital footprint with terrifying precision.
She wasn't going to be a victim. She wasn't going to be a maid.
She picked up her phone and typed a single, encrypted reply back to the unknown number in Chicago.

Thank you, Roman. I’ve attached a file. It’s the Volkov’s new supply route. Consider the debt paid in full.
Maya hit send, pocketed the gold coin, and walked out into the sunlight, ready to conquer the world.
