Chapter 10 - The Unspoken Goodbye

Three months after the collapse, the war was officially over. A historic treaty had been signed in the neutral capital, establishing a peaceful border between the Alliance and the Resistance.

Julian stood on the wooden porch of his farmhouse in the Southern Valley. The apple trees were in full bloom, a sea of sweet white blossoms that danced in the gentle breeze. He walked with a slight limp, a permanent reminder of the basement, but his eyes were peaceful and bright.

"Daddy! Look!" Leo laughed, running through the tall grass, holding a small wooden toy boat.

Julian smiled, pulling his son into his arms, inhaling the sweet, fresh scent of his hair. "It's beautiful, Leo."

His wife, Grace, walked out of the house, carrying a small, brown paper package that had just been delivered by the postman. "This arrived for you, Julian. There is no return address."

Julian set Leo down and took the package. He tore the paper open.

Inside was a large, beautifully braided loaf of fresh rye bread, still carrying the rich, sweet aroma of yeast and honey. Tucked beneath the loaf was a small, white envelope.

Julian opened it. Inside was a child's drawing, but this one was different. It showed two men—one in a green shirt and one in a grey shirt—standing hand-in-hand beneath a massive, glowing golden sun. At the bottom, written in a child’s neat print, was a single word: Peace.

Julian held the drawing close to his chest, his eyes filling with tears of pure, quiet gratitude.

He looked toward the northern hills, where the road led to the coast, knowing that somewhere out there, a baker was looking at his own daughter, breathing in the sweet smell of dough, and remembering the brother he had found in the dark.

The weight of the scars was gone. They were finally home.
