Chapter 6 - The Rumbling Above

On the fifth day, the ground shook.

It was not artillery. It was the heavy, rhythmic vibration of steel tracks and the deep, guttural roar of a diesel engine directly above their heads. An Alliance tank.

"They're clearing the street," Julian whispered, his eyes wide.

Suddenly, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the rubble above. Men were shouting in the harsh, clipped dialect of the Alliance military.

Kaelen froze, his body going rigid, his hand instinctively reaching for the rusted iron pipe he had kept near him. He looked at Julian, his eyes filled with a sudden, desperate panic. If Julian called out, the Alliance soldiers would dig them out, and Kaelen would either be executed on the spot or sent to a brutal prisoner-of-war camp.

Julian looked at Kaelen. He looked at the fear in the eyes of the man who had saved his leg, who had shared his water, and who carried his daughter's drawing over his heart.

"Over here!" a soldier's voice shouted from above, his boots shifting the rubble directly over their heads. "Check this cellar entrance!"

Julian took a deep breath. He grabbed a heavy piece of stone and struck the metal pipe next to him three times. Thud. Thud. Thud.

It was the standard Alliance signal for Sector Clear/No Targets.

Above them, the footsteps stopped.

"Hear that?" a soldier said. "Just the pipes shifting. Let's move to the next block. This sector is dead."

The footsteps faded away, followed by the rumbling of the tank.

Kaelen let out a long, shaky breath, his shoulders slumping as he dropped the iron pipe. He looked at Julian, his face filled with a deep, speechless gratitude.

"You saved me," Kaelen whispered.

"No," Julian said, looking at the ceiling. "I saved my brother."
