Chapter 6 - WHAT THEY PUT IN SOPHIE’S WATER

Margaret’s attorney called the recording misleading.

She claimed “lose everything” referred to a corporate dispute, not Adrian’s life.

That interpretation was possible.

The conversation still established knowledge of an unrepaired brake problem before the crash.

Investigators separated what they could prove from what grief wanted proved.

I struggled with that discipline.

If Margaret knew the car was dangerous and allowed Adrian to drive, part of me wanted the law to call it murder.

The prosecutor explained the difference.

“Intentional killing requires evidence they wanted death. Knowing concealment created grave risk may support a different homicide theory.”

“What if they did not care whether he died?”

“That matters. It is not identical to intending it.”

Accuracy felt colder than anger.

It was also stronger.

The financial audit showed why Adrian planned to approach the board.

Preston had used hotel renovation funds to finance failed luxury developments. Margaret concealed losses through related-party vendors. The flagship hotel’s employee retirement reserve had been pledged as collateral without board approval.

Adrian discovered it.

If he reached the board, Preston would lose executive control and Margaret’s personal guarantees would be exposed.

The red folder likely held proof.

Marcus Bell contacted me privately through Maya.

“Adrian left something in the hotel.”

“What?”

“A key.”

Marcus had hesitated to reveal it because the police were already treating every hotel employee as a potential witness.

He brought the information to investigators first.

Adrian gave him a brass key one week before the crash.

“If my family turns the hotel against Sophie,” Adrian had said, “give this to Evelyn only after she asks for the cameras.”

He had anticipated manipulation.

Not necessarily his death.

The key belonged to a wall safe inside the bridal suite.

The same suite Celeste used before the wedding.

Police obtained a warrant.

The safe sat behind a framed painting of the original hotel.

Its lock recorded access codes.

Adrian’s code had not been used since his death.

Celeste’s temporary code opened it at 2:11 a.m. the night before the wedding.

She remained inside the suite for twenty-three minutes.

The safe was empty when police opened it.

Celeste denied knowing it existed.

The corridor camera showed her carrying nothing when she left.

A service-elevator camera showed Preston waiting below.

He held a black leather satchel.

Celeste entered the elevator.

When the doors opened on the executive floor, the satchel was gone.

Marcus checked the internal archive.

The elevator had stopped between floors for forty-two seconds using a maintenance override.

Only one secure storage compartment existed inside that shaft.

A document chute built during the hotel’s banking years.

Engineers opened it under police supervision.

Inside lay Adrian’s black ledger, a flash drive, an original trust amendment, and the missing red brake folder.

One page had been torn from the ledger.

On the exposed edge, Adrian had written three words:

MARGARET — PAYMENT — CRASH.
