Chapter 7 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE HOTEL ROOM
Ethan ran from the boardroom. By the time he reached the observation room, it was empty.
A service door stood open.
On the floor lay a metal watch.
Its hands had stopped at 9:14.
Daniel’s watch.
Ethan picked it up.
Victor entered behind him.
“You saw him?”
“Yes.”
“Are you certain?”
“I know my brother.”
They searched the service corridor, but Daniel had vanished.
Claire was taken to federal detention.
The agents refused Ethan’s requests to speak with her.
By evening, news outlets had turned her arrest into a corporate scandal.
Photographs of Claire and Victor appeared beneath headlines about ambition, adultery, and murder.
Ethan sat alone in his house watching strangers reduce his marriage to a scandalous photograph.
At midnight, the hotel card began flashing on the kitchen table.
A tiny indicator light pulsed beneath the black surface.
Ethan placed it against the card reader.
A message appeared.
ROOM 1708. ONE HOUR. COME ALONE.
The hotel was the same one listed on the reservation.
Ethan arrived at 12:47.
Room 1708 stood unlocked.
Inside, the curtains were closed.
A man sat near the window.
He was thinner than Ethan remembered.
A scar ran from his left temple to his jaw.
But he was Daniel.
Ethan could not move.
Daniel stood.
“Little brother.”
Ethan crossed the room and struck him.
Daniel fell against the chair.
“You were alive.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You let us bury someone else.”
“I couldn’t come back.”
“You let Mom mourn you.”
“I know.”
“She almost died.”
“I know.”
Ethan grabbed Daniel’s shirt.
“Six years.”
Daniel did not defend himself.
“I was taken before the fire,” he said. “Marcus Hale was trapped inside the terminal.”
“Claire’s father.”
“Yes.”
“Why did they identify him as you?”
“Because Margaret needed me to disappear, and Alexander needed Marcus’s death hidden.”
“Why?”
“Marcus was not just an auditor.”
Daniel sat slowly.
“He helped create Meridian.”
Ethan stared at him.
“Claire believes he was investigating it.”
“He was, after it became something he could no longer control.”
Daniel explained that Meridian began as a covert corporate network designed to move witnesses out of dangerous countries.
Alexander Langley transformed it into a criminal organization.
Marcus collected evidence.
Daniel agreed to help deliver it.
Victor discovered part of the operation but became trapped between his father and Margaret.
“Who is Margaret loyal to?” Ethan asked.
“Herself.”
“And Rebecca?”
“Alive.”
Ethan felt relief and anger collide.
“Claire was arrested for her murder.”
“Rebecca agreed to disappear.”
“Why frame Claire?”
“To force Alexander to reveal where he keeps the original Meridian ledger.”
Daniel placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Claire, Victor, and Rebecca inside Room 1708 five months earlier.
“The hotel room was a handoff point,” Daniel said. “Rebecca believed she was meeting me.”
“You were the third name.”
“My name was a code.”
“Then where were you?”
“Watching.”
Ethan looked at him in disbelief.
“You watched my wife walk into danger?”
“I didn’t trust her.”
“She risked everything to find you.”
“She also worked with Victor.”
“She did that because she thought you were alive.”
Daniel looked away.
“I made mistakes.”
“You destroyed our lives while calling them mistakes.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You think Claire is innocent because you love her.”
“I don’t know if I love her anymore.”
The words hurt as soon as he spoke them.
Daniel handed him a key.
“Claire’s promotion gives her access to the executive archive.”
“She’s in jail.”
“Not for long.”
“You planned this.”
“Claire knew she might be arrested.”
Ethan stared at him.
“She knew?”
“She agreed to the operation.”
Another lie.
Even after everything that happened, Claire had kept planning with people who treated Ethan like a piece on a board.
Daniel continued.
“During the transfer, she will be moved through a restricted elevator connected to the archive level.”
“You’re breaking her out?”
“She will enter the archive, retrieve the ledger, and return before the escort team realizes the route changed.”
“That is insane.”
“It is the only way.”
Ethan placed the key on the table.
“I’m done helping people who lie to me.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Then Claire will remain charged with murder.”
“Rebecca can reveal she’s alive.”
“If Rebecca appears before we have the ledger, Alexander will kill every witness.”
Ethan turned toward the door.
Daniel spoke behind him.
“Claire did not marry you for the notebook.”
Ethan stopped.
“She admitted she targeted me.”
“At first,” Daniel said. “Then Marcus’s final message changed everything.”
“What message?”
“He told her to leave you alone because you knew nothing.”
“Then why did she stay?”
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Because she loved you.”
Ethan looked back.
Daniel held out a phone.
On the screen was a recording dated ten years earlier.
Claire sat alone in a car, crying.
“I found nothing in Ethan’s house,” she said to someone off camera. “I’m ending the investigation.”
A man’s voice asked, “Because he is useless?”
Claire shook her head.
“Because he is kind, and I’ve already hurt him enough.”
The recording ended.
Daniel placed the phone down.
“She chose you long before you knew there was a choice.”
Ethan’s own phone rang.

Victor’s voice came through.
“The transport carrying Claire has been attacked.”
