Chapter 8 - WHEN THE MASKS FALL
The transport van was found beneath an overpass. Two federal agents were unconscious.
Claire was missing.
Blood marked the rear door, but none belonged to her.
Victor believed Alexander’s men had taken her.
Daniel disagreed.
“Margaret took her.”
“How do you know?” Ethan asked.
“Because Alexander prefers public executions.”
Daniel tracked a signal hidden inside Claire’s necklace.
The device led to an abandoned courthouse on the edge of the city.
Ethan, Daniel, and Victor entered through separate doors.
Claire was tied to a chair inside an old hearing room.
Margaret stood beside her.
Rebecca Sloan sat near the judge’s bench, alive but visibly injured.
Ethan looked at her.
“You let Claire be arrested for your murder.”
Rebecca’s eyes filled with guilt.
“I didn’t know they would use her.”
Margaret laughed.
“She knew enough.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“I’m sorry.”
He did not answer.
Margaret held a gun near Claire’s head.
“Give me Daniel’s notebook.”
Daniel emerged from the rear aisle.
“You always wanted the wrong evidence.”
Margaret turned.
Daniel held the notebook.
“The codes inside it locate the original Meridian ledger,” she said.
“No,” Daniel replied. “The notebook records who received copies.”
Margaret’s confidence weakened.
“How many?”
“Seven.”
Victor entered from the side.
“My father spent six years searching for one ledger while seven witnesses held pieces of it.”
Margaret aimed at him.
“You were supposed to remain obedient.”
“I tried.”
Victor looked at Claire.
“Then I remembered what obedience cost.”
Alexander Langley’s voice echoed from the doorway.
“It cost you nothing I did not give you.”
Armed men entered behind him.
Alexander regarded Daniel with disgust.
“You should have died in the terminal.”
Daniel smiled coldly.
“You should have checked the body.”
Alexander looked toward Ethan.
“You resemble your brother less than I remembered.”
“We’ve met?”
“At the funeral.”
“You watched us bury Claire’s father.”
“I watched a problem become useful.”
Claire strained against the restraints.
“You killed him.”
Alexander shrugged.
“Marcus killed himself the moment he believed morality mattered more than survival.”
Margaret moved closer to Alexander.
“I delivered Daniel, Claire, and the notebook.”
“You also allowed Rebecca to live.”
“She was useful.”
“Not anymore.”
Alexander raised his weapon toward Rebecca.
Victor fired first.
Chaos erupted.
Ethan dropped behind the benches.
Daniel tackled one of Alexander’s men.
Margaret dragged Claire toward the rear door.
Ethan followed.
He caught Margaret in the corridor and struck the gun from her hand.
She pulled a knife.
Claire kicked her knee, breaking free enough for Ethan to push Margaret against the wall.
Victor appeared and restrained her.
Inside the hearing room, Daniel stood over Alexander.
The old man had been shot in the shoulder.
Sirens approached.
Rebecca had triggered an emergency transmitter before entering the courthouse.
Federal tactical units surrounded the building.
Alexander smiled despite the blood spreading across his shirt.
“You think arrest changes anything?”
Daniel aimed his weapon.
Ethan stepped between them.
“Don’t.”
“He killed Marcus.”
“He stole six years from us.”
“And killing him gives him the ending he wants.”
Daniel’s hand shook.
Finally, he lowered the gun.
Agents entered.
Margaret began shouting that she had evidence against Alexander.
Alexander accused Victor.
Victor confessed to authorizing illegal transfers but produced years of records showing coercion and hidden payments.
Rebecca testified that Claire had no involvement in her disappearance.
As agents removed the prisoners, Claire approached Ethan.
Her wrists were bruised.
“You came.”
“I came for the truth.”
“And did you find it?”
“Parts of it.”
She looked at Daniel standing across the room.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“You always wanted to tell me later.”
Claire’s eyes lowered.
“I don’t know how to ask you to forgive me.”
“Then don’t.”
Pain moved across her face.
Ethan continued.
“Forgiveness isn’t the same as pretending.”
“I know.”
“I need to know who I am without your secrets.”
Claire nodded, though tears ran down her cheeks.
Victor watched them from a distance.
An agent approached him with handcuffs.
Victor held out his hands.
Before being taken away, he looked at Claire.
“I’m sorry.”
She said nothing.
Victor turned toward Ethan.
“She never loved me.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“That doesn’t make what you did harmless.”
“No.”
The agent led him away.
Daniel walked toward Ethan.
Their reunion had not felt like one.
Too much grief stood between them.
“Mom deserves to know,” Ethan said.
Daniel nodded.
“I’m afraid.”
“She spent six years believing you were dead.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to protect her from being angry.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“You sound like someone else I know.”
Ethan followed his gaze.
May you like
Claire stood alone beneath the courthouse lights.
For the first time in eleven years, Ethan walked past her without reaching for her hand.
