Chapter 3 - THE GARDEN BETRAYAL

The next evening, the rain had stopped, but it left behind a thick, freezing fog that rolled off the nearby lake, blanketing the sprawling, manicured gardens of the Sterling estate in a heavy, ghostly shroud. Clara had spent the last twenty-four hours in a state of absolute, paralyzed panic. She had tried to find her passport, but her vanity drawers had been cleared out. She had tried to slip past the front gate, but the guards had politely but firmly turned her back, claiming Julian had ordered "strict bed rest due to the stormy weather."
At precisely 8:00 PM, the bedroom door opened, and Julian walked in. He looked exceptionally handsome, wearing a fresh beige sweater, his eyes warm and inviting. He carried a thick, soft cashmere shawl in his hands.
"Clara, darling," Julian said, his voice a perfect imitation of a loving husband. "Mother has just completed the lighting installation in the new glass conservatory in the back garden. She’s dying to show you. The fog is beautiful tonight, and the fresh air will do you and our little girl some good."
Clara stared into his dark eyes, searching for even a microscopic flicker of guilt, a single trace of the boy who had once promised to protect her forever. There was nothing. His eyes were empty, glassy pools of polite deceit. She knew that if she refused, she would arouse his suspicion. She had to play along until she could find a gap in their armor.
"Okay," Clara whispered, letting him drape the warm shawl over her trembling shoulders.
They walked downstairs and out the heavy French doors of the terrace. The garden was a silent labyrinth of towering boxwood hedges, the gravel path crunching softly beneath their steps. The fog was so dense that the massive mansion behind them vanished within seconds, leaving them wrapped in a cold, white void.
As they reached the old, abandoned boundary wall of the estate—a forgotten area near an ancient, covered stone well—Julian suddenly stopped.
From the thick mist ahead, Evelyn stepped forward, her pink silk dress dragging slightly on the damp grass, her face looking like a pale mask in the gloom. Beside her stood two massive, silent men in dark security suits.
"Julian?" Clara asked, her voice cracking as she instinctively took a step back, her hand clutching her stomach. "What is this? Where is the conservatory?"
"The performance is over, Clara," Evelyn said, her voice entirely devoid of any maternal sweetness. "Julian told me you were hovering near the study doors last night. We had hoped to keep things elegant and quiet until the delivery, but your... curiosity has made you an immediate liability to our family’s timeline."
Clara turned to sprint back toward the house, but the two security guards lunged forward with terrifying speed. Their heavy, gloved hands clamped onto her arms, pinning her in place.

"Julian, please! Help me! The baby!" Clara screamed, her voice echoing frantically through the foggy woods. She fought with every ounce of her remaining strength, but the men were too strong, their grip like iron vices.
Julian stood perfectly still just five feet away. He slowly adjusted the silver watch on his wrist, watching her struggle with a cold, clinical detachment. "Don't make this harder than it has to be, Clara," he said flatly, turning his back to her as the guards dragged her screaming into the cold, foggy dark.
