Chapter 7 - THE DESPERATE ESCAPE PLAN

Hours bled into one another until the concept of time lost all meaning. Clara’s hands were completely numb, the cold water having acted as a cruel anesthetic for the deep cuts on her fingers. She had managed to carve out three shallow footholds in the stone wall, allowing her to stand just inches above the freezing water level. Her muscles screamed in protest, her lower back burning under the immense pressure of her pregnancy, but she held onto the rusted pipe like a lifeline.
The rain had stopped, replaced by a quiet, eerie morning mist that drifted down the shaft of the well. The circular sky above had shifted from a pitch black to a pale, misty gray.
Suddenly, a soft rustling sound from the top of the well caught Clara’s attention. She froze, pressing her body flat against the cold, wet stones, her eyes wide with terror. Was Julian coming back to check on her? Was Dr. Thorne arriving early to carry out their horrific extraction plan?
"Clara? Are you down there?"
The voice was not Julian’s cold, arrogant baritone, nor was it Evelyn’s sharp command. It was a soft, trembling whisper, belonging to Maria, the young housemaid who had worked at the Sterling estate for only a few months. Maria was a quiet girl from the same small town Clara had grown up in, and they had often shared quiet, friendly chats in the kitchen when Evelyn wasn't around.
"Maria!" Clara gasped, her voice cracking as she tried to project it up the deep shaft without screaming too loudly. "Maria, please! Yes, I’m here! They locked me down here! They’re going to take my baby!"
"Oh my God," Maria sobbed, her face appearing against the iron grate above. She looked terrified, her eyes darting nervously toward the woods behind her. "I saw them dragging you out last night, but Julian told the staff you had been rushed to a private hospital in the city. I didn't believe him. I found the keys to the old well grate on Julian's desk while cleaning his office."
"Can you unlock it?" Clara pleaded, her voice trembling with a desperate hope.
"I can," Maria whispered, the sound of keys jingling bringing a rush of warmth to Clara’s heart. "But the well is too deep, Clara. I don't have a rope strong enough to pull you up by myself, and if the security guards see me, they’ll lock me down there too. I have to go find help. I have to call the police."
"No, Maria, wait!" Clara cried out, panic flaring in her chest. "The Sterlings own the local police department! They pay the sheriff's salary! If you call them, they’ll just call Julian first. You need to call the state investigators, or go to the next-door estate. The Harrisons... they’ve hated the Sterlings for years. Go to them!"

"Okay, okay," Maria stammered, the sound of the key turning in the heavy padlock echoing down the shaft. The padlock clicked open. "The grate is unlocked now, Clara. I’m leaving it loose so you can push it open if you get to the top. I’m going to the Harrisons. Hang on!"
The face vanished from the opening, leaving Clara alone once again in the dim light. But the heavy iron padlock was no longer holding her down. The door to her cage was unlocked; now, she just had to find a way to climb the sky.
