THE VOW OF SHADOW KENNELS / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - Forever Found

One year later, the sun shone brightly over a beautiful, rolling pasture in upstate New York. The air was clean, smelling of fresh clover and pine, a world away from the sterile concrete of Shadow Kennels.

Sarah stood on the porch of their new home, holding a cup of coffee, a warm smile on her face.

The legal battle had been intense, but with the viral video and Marcus’s testimony, Silas Vance and Sergeant Thomas had been sentenced to twenty years in federal prison. Shadow Kennels had been shut down, and the remaining animals had been rehabilitated and adopted into loving homes.

More importantly, Rex had been officially cleared of all charges, his military records restored with honor.

"Look, Mama!" Leo’s voice giggled from the yard.

Sarah looked down. Leo, now three years old, was running through the tall green grass. Beside him, his coat sleek, healthy, and shining in the sunlight, was Rex.

The giant German Shepherd was no longer the brooding, hopeless creature of Kennel 42. His ears were up, his tail was wagging, and his dark eyes were filled with a deep, radiant joy.

Leo tripped on a small hill, tumbling into the grass. He didn't cry. He just laughed as Rex gently nudged him with his wet nose, before lying down beside him, letting the boy rest his head on his thick, soft fur.

Marcus walked up the porch steps, carrying a bag of dog treats. "He’s a different dog, Sarah. Or maybe... he’s just finally the dog he was always meant to be."

"No," Sarah said softly, watching her son and the giant dog share a quiet, loving moment in the afternoon sun. "They saved each other."

For the first time, Rex looked up toward the porch. He didn't scowl. He didn't whimper. He let out a soft, happy bark, his face breaking into a beautiful, loyal smile.

He was finally safe. He was finally loved. He was forever found.
