THE VOW OF SHADOW KENNELS / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Storm Breaks

The sky over Ocala turned the color of bruised plums as a violent summer thunderstorm rolled in. Lightning split the heavens, and the wind began to howl, shaking the metal roof of Shadow Kennels.

Inside the facility, the power flickered and died, plunging the corridors into pitch blackness before the emergency red lights kicked on. The dogs began to panic, their barks rising into a deafening chorus of terror.

Silas Vance walked down the corridor of Section C, a heavy tranquilizer rifle in his hands. Beside him was a burly man with a scarred face—Sergeant Thomas.

"You sure the paperwork is clean, Silas?" Thomas asked, his voice barely audible over the thunder. "If the state inspectors look into this..."

"The paperwork says he was aggressive and had to be put down for staff safety," Silas sneered, stopping in front of Kennel 42. "No one cares about a broken military dog, Thomas. Once he's gone, your little secret about the drug money stays buried."

Inside the cage, Rex stood tall, his ears pinned back, his body tense. He knew what the rifle meant. He had seen it before.

Just as Silas raised the rifle, a massive bolt of lightning struck the transformer outside. The entire shelter shook. In the chaos, the electronic locks on the high-security cages—poorly maintained by Silas to save budget money—glitched.

With a loud clack, the door to Kennel 43, housing a massive, aggressive mastiff mix used in illegal breeding, swung wide open. The mastiff, crazed by the storm, lunged directly at Silas.

"What the—!" Silas screamed, dropping the rifle as the dog knocked him to the ground, clamping its jaws onto his arm.

Thomas panicked, drawing his sidearm, but in the red darkness and the rain pouring through a leak in the roof, he couldn't get a clean shot without hitting Silas.

Rex didn't hesitate. Seizing the opportunity, he threw his massive weight against his own faulty gate. The rusted latch snapped.

Instead of running for the exit, Rex lunged at the mastiff. With a fierce roar, the German Shepherd grabbed the larger dog by the scruff of its neck, pulling it off Silas and pinning it to the concrete floor with dominant, military precision. The mastiff whimpered, submitting instantly to the alpha.

Silas scrambled backward, clutching his bleeding arm, gasping in terror. He looked up at the dog he had called a monster—the dog that had just saved his life.

But gratitude was not in Silas’s nature.

"Thomas... shoot him!" Silas roared, pointing at Rex. "Shoot him now!"
