Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Waterfront

Pier 42 in South Brooklyn was wrapped in fog when Alessandro’s three-car convoy arrived at 10:00 PM.

The smell of salt water, diesel fuel, and rusted iron hung thick in the air. Ships rested quietly against the heavy wooden pylons, their cranes looming like silent giants against the dark skyline.

Inside an abandoned shipping warehouse at the edge of the pier, six men sat around a makeshift table lit by a single overhead halogen lamp.

Councilman Thomas Davies stood at the head of the table, his face flushed red with anger, flanked by two high-ranking lieutenants from the Moretti syndicate’s financial branch.

When Alessandro walked into the warehouse, flanked by Marco and four armed security guards, the temperature in the room plummeted.

"Alessandro!" Councilman Davies spat, stepping forward. "What the hell was that display this morning?! You kicked me out of your private study—a city councilman—for a maid’s child?!"

The two financial lieutenants exchanged nervous glances, but Davies, emboldened by his political position, continued his tirade.

"I have spent three years ensuring your shipping licenses cleared the municipal board without federal interference!" Davies shouted, slamming his hand onto the table. "I come to your house to discuss a forty-million-dollar port expansion, and you treat me like a nuisance because some beggar girl showed up with a spray bottle!"

Alessandro walked slowly to the table. He didn't raise his hands; he didn't raise his voice. He simply stood at the head of the table, leaning forward slightly, resting his palms flat on the wood.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

"Davies," Alessandro said softly, his dark eyes locked onto the councilman’s face with a lethal, absolute focus. "You have taken six hundred thousand dollars in private consulting fees from my organization over the last thirty-six months."

Davies swallowed hard, his bluster instantly faltering under that terrifying stare. "I... I have delivered results—"

"You delivered paperwork," Alessandro interrupted coldly. "This morning, a six-year-old child walked three miles through the rain because her mother was dying of pneumonia and was terrified that my company would ruin her life if she missed a single shift."

Alessandro stood up to his full height, his broad shoulders casting a long shadow across the warehouse floor.

"If a child understands responsibility better than a city councilman, then I am paying the wrong person six hundred thousand dollars," Alessandro declared. "Your contract with the Moretti Trust is terminated."

Davies went pale. "You can't do that! Without my backing, the city inspectors will audit your warehouses by Monday!"

"Let them audit," Alessandro replied indifferently. "Every inch of Pier 42 is clean, legal, and brought fully up to code as of six o'clock this evening. Furthermore, five percent of all net profits from this port will henceforth be directed into a private foundation providing childcare and medical coverage for every transport and maintenance worker on these docks."

The two financial lieutenants stared at Alessandro in absolute shock.

"Don Alessandro," one of the lieutenants stammered nervously. "That will reduce our annual net dividend by nearly three million dollars! The board will—"

"The board will do precisely as I order them to do," Alessandro cut him off, his voice echoing through the hollow warehouse like iron sliding on stone. "My father built this organization on power. I am going to run it on stability. A man who cannot protect the people who sweep his floors has no right to rule a city."

He turned his back on the stunned councilman, walking back toward his waiting sedan.

"Marco," Alessandro said as he stepped into the car.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Have Dr. Vance clear the private VIP suite at St. Catherine’s. I want Sophia Delgado moved there immediately. And hire a full-time private tutor for the girl while her mother recovers."

Marco smiled softly in the dark interior of the car. "Consider it done, Don Alessandro."
