Chapter 4 - The Recovery

Four weeks passed. Autumn transitioned into the crisp, cold air of early November, dusting Central Park in shades of gold, amber, and crimson.
At St. Catherine Medical Center, Sophia Delgado sat in a comfortable armchair near the window of her spacious private room. Her skin had recovered its healthy color, her breathing was clear and deep, and the hollow fatigue that had defined her face for years had disappeared.
On the small table beside her lay a leather folder containing her new employment contract—a salaried position as the Chief Household Supervisor of Villa Moretti, complete with full health insurance, a retirement plan, and a housing allowance.
There was a soft knock at the door before it swung open.
Emma rushed into the room, wearing a neat navy-blue school uniform, a bright pink backpack slung over her shoulders.
"Mom!" Emma cheered, jumping into her mother's arms.
Sophia caught her daughter, burying her face in Emma's hair, laughing happily. "Look at you! How was school today?"
"It was great! Mr. Marco drove me in the big black car, and I got an A on my spelling test!" Emma declared proudly, pulling a paper covered in red gold stars from her bag.
Behind her, Alessandro Moretti stepped into the room, holding a small box tied with a satin ribbon. He wore his usual dark suit, but his posture was relaxed, the sharp tension that usually defined his jaw softened by the sight of the mother and child.
Sophia stood up carefully, bowing her head slightly. "Mr. Moretti... thank you for coming."
"Please, Sophia, sit down," Alessandro said gently, setting the small box on the table. "You look well."
"I don't know how to thank you," Sophia said, her voice thick with emotion as she looked around the luxurious room. "The doctors told me what you did... the contract, the foundation, Emma’s school... I could never repay this in ten lifetimes."
Alessandro walked to the window, looking out over the city skyline. "You don't owe me anything, Sophia. Your daughter came into my home and taught me a lesson I had forgotten."
He turned back to face her, his gaze warm and grounded. "For twenty years, I believed that maintaining control meant keeping everyone at a distance. I thought showing kindness was a vulnerability that dangerous men would exploit."
He looked down at Emma, who was busily opening the box he had brought—revealing a brand-new, high-end artist’s set filled with dozens of colored pencils, paints, and sketchbooks.
"Emma showed me that true power isn't about making people afraid of you," Alessandro continued softly. "It's about making sure the people under your care never have to feel afraid again."

Sophia reached out, resting her hand gently over Alessandro’s broad forearm. "You gave us a future, Mr. Moretti."
"Call me Alessandro," he replied with a soft, genuine smile. "And your future is just beginning."
