Chapter 10: The Real Target (Open Ending)

The searchlight from the military helicopter snapped on with a sudden, blinding flash, turning the heavy rain into a curtain of glittering silver needles that illuminated the entire roof structure. The wind from the massive rotors howled around Leo’s face, soaking his orange uniform in seconds, making it cling tightly to his muscles.
Director Vance stood firmly in the open cabin doorway of the aircraft, her long black trench coat flapping violently in the gale. Her sharp, silver hair was pinned back neatly, her expression an icy mask of pure, calculated malice. The bright red laser sight of her sniper rifle was locked directly onto the center of Leo’s chest.
"This is the end of your mission, Captain Vance," her voice boomed over the helicopter's external speakers, clear and chilling despite the roar of the storm. "Your hacker friend has been disconnected from the grid, your files are frozen in transit, and your little prison riot is currently being suppressed by my ground forces. You are a ghost with no home left to run to."
Leo stood perfectly still in the middle of the wet helipad, his boots pressed firmly against the white painted lines. He didn't raise his rifle. He didn't try to run for cover. He looked into the blinding light of the searchlight, his face calm, his eyes wide and completely unblinking.
"The files aren't frozen, Director," Leo called back, his voice carrying clearly over the sound of the rotors. "Roxie didn't route the stream through the state servers. She used the emergency military satellite link that you authorized for my division five years ago. The upload completed exactly thirty seconds ago. Right now, every media network in the world is downloading the footage of your black-budget transactions."
Director Vance’s face turned slightly pale under the searchlight, her fingers tightening on the trigger of her rifle. "You're bluffing, Leo! That channel was deactivated after the purge!"
"A channel is never truly deactivated if you know the master override keys, Director," Leo said, a cold, humorless smile finally touching his lips. "You taught me that during my training. Remember?"
Suddenly, a loud, crashing sound echoed from the roof hatch behind them. Victor Vance burst out onto the deck, his white linen suit covered in dark blood from his shoulder wound, his eyes wild and completely crazed with desperation. He carried a heavy canvas duffel bag filled with stacks of hundred-dollar bills and fake passports—his ultimate escape fund.
"Director! Let me in! We need to leave right now!" Victor screamed, running toward the helicopter, his boots slipping on the wet concrete. "The feds are at the main gates! The entire facility is compromised!"
Director Vance didn't look at Victor. Her eyes remained fixed on Leo’s chest, the red laser dot steady against his orange uniform. "He’s a liability now, Victor. Just like you."
With a swift, cold-blooded movement, Director Vance shifted her rifle barrel just three inches to the left and pulled the trigger.
BANG!
The heavy sniper round struck Victor squarely in the chest, the force of the impact launching his body backward across the helipad, his duffel bag bursting open, sending thousands of crisp hundred-dollar bills flying into the stormy night sky like green leaves in a hurricane. Victor crashed onto the wet concrete, his eyes wide in absolute shock, his breath catching in his throat before going completely still.
Jax let out a choked gasp from the shadow of the ventilation shaft, his hands gripping his weapon in pure disbelief. "She... she just executed her own partner."
Director Vance turned the rifle back toward Leo, her finger resting on the trigger once again. "Now, Captain. It’s your turn. Any last words for the history books?"
Leo took a deep breath, the cold rain washing down his face, his eyes shifting from the rifle barrel to the small digital tablet strapped to his wrist. On the screen, a tiny green indicator light was flashing consistently—the remote manual override for the helicopter’s internal fuel pumps, a code Roxie had extracted from the server terminal downstairs just minutes ago.
He could press the button, explode the helicopter's fuel lines, and take Director Vance down into the fire with him. Or he could drop his weapon, surrender to her tactical team, and spend the rest of his life running from her assassins.
Leo looked up into the rain, a calm, terrifying clarity filling his eyes as his thumb hovered over the red button on his wrist.
"Just one, Director," Leo whispered into the storm. "Eat up."
Outside, a massive bolt of lightning split the night sky, illuminating the roof of Iron Gate Penitentiary as the final second on the clock reached zero, leaving the fate of the Ghost hanging between life, death, and total destruction high above the burning prison yard.
