Chapter 4: The Whispers at Midnight

The prison block was dead silent at midnight, the only sound being the low, rhythmic hum of the ventilation system and the distant, occasional cough of a guard down the hall. The bright fluorescent lights had been clicked off, leaving the cells bathed in the eerie, blue glow of the emergency night lamps.

Leo sat cross-legged on the floor of his cell, his back against the cold concrete wall, his eyes open in the dark. He wasn't sleeping. A man with his history never slept deeply in a room full of thieves.

Suddenly, a soft, scratching sound echoed from the wall behind his toilet fixture. A small brick of concrete was slowly pushed backward, revealing a narrow, dark gap between his cell and the plumbing access corridor.

"Leo... Leo, can you hear me?" a voice whispered from the dark gap. It was a female voice—sharp, urgent, and familiar.

Leo stood up silently, walking over to the toilet bowl and leaning his ear close to the opening. "Roxie. You're late. I expected you to tap into the communications grid three hours ago."

Roxie was Leo’s former communications handler from the Black Ghost Division, a brilliant digital hacker who had escaped the government purge by disappearing into the dark web. She was his only ally on the outside.

"The Warden has updated the firewall, Leo," Roxie’s voice whispered through the stone gap, slightly distorted by static. "Thomas is using a military-grade encryption network provided by your brother’s shell companies. It took me four hours to bypass the main security node. Listen to me—you need to get out of that block tonight. The file I just downloaded from Victor’s private server... it’s not an investment portfolio. It’s a target list."

Leo’s eyes narrowed in the blue light. "Whose names are on the list, Roxie?"

"Yours, for starters," she said, her voice trembling slightly with anxiety. "But more importantly, they have the coordinates for the federal safe house where the witnesses from your last mission are being held. Victor is planning to execute them tomorrow morning during the prison transport shift. He’s using a corrupt SWAT team from the city police to do the job. If those witnesses die, the treason charge against you becomes permanent. You’ll never be able to clear your name."

"How is Victor routing the operational commands?" Leo asked, his voice dead and calm. "The Warden told me the cells don't have external network access."

"They don't, but Victor’s VIP suite on the fourth floor has a dedicated satellite uplink disguised as an air conditioning compressor on the roof," Roxie explained. "He’s running an entire black-market command center from that room. If you can get to the fourth floor and plug this flash drive into his main terminal, I can overwrite his satellite signal and broadcast his financial ledgers directly to the Department of Justice."

A small, silver flash drive was slowly pushed through the narrow concrete gap between the stones, landing on the floorboards near Leo’s boot.

Leo picked up the drive, slipping it deep into the hidden lining of his orange jumpsuit sleeve. "What about the keys for the fourth-floor elevator, Roxie? The Warden carries the master keycard on his belt."

"There's a guard named Officer Miller," Roxie said. "He works the midnight shift on Tier 3. His daughter is sick, and Victor has been paying for her medical treatments to keep him on the payroll. But Miller is terrified. I contacted him through an encrypted channel an hour ago. He knows what Victor is planning to do to those witnesses, and he wants out. He will leave his master keycard inside the fire extinguisher box near the end of your tier at 2:00 AM."

"Two hours," Leo murmured, looking at the digital clock on the wall across the hall. "That's plenty of time. Tell the federal team to get ready, Roxie. Tomorrow morning, the Vance family business is going into liquidation."

"Be careful, Leo," Roxie whispered before the concrete brick was slowly pulled back into place, sealing the gap, leaving him alone once again in the blue darkness.

Leo walked back to his cot, sitting down, his fingers tracing the outline of the silver drive inside his sleeve. The trap was set. Now he just had to walk into the teeth of the lion.
