Chapter 10 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

“Peter Carter is alive.”

Evelyn stared at Samuel.

Nobody moved.

Rainwater dripped from his jacket onto the carpet.

Blood ran slowly from the cut above his eyebrow.

His breathing was uneven.

But Evelyn barely noticed any of it.

She heard only four words.

Peter Carter is alive.

“No.”

Samuel stepped inside.

“Evelyn—”

“No.”

She backed away.

“My father died eight years ago.”

“I know what you were told.”

“I buried him.”

Samuel looked at her.

“No.”

Evelyn froze.

“What?”

“You buried a closed casket.”

Her face changed.

“How do you know that?”

“Because I arranged the funeral.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn stared at him.

“You told me the hospital wouldn’t let me see him because of the autopsy.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

“I lied.”

Evelyn slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room.

Lily jumped.

Evelyn immediately looked at her daughter.

But Samuel did not move.

He did not raise a hand.

He simply accepted it.

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“You let me stand over an empty coffin.”

Samuel looked at her.

“Yes.”

“You watched me cry.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me bury my father.”

“Yes.”

“And he was alive?”

Samuel swallowed.

“Yes.”

Evelyn struck him again.

Julian moved instinctively.

Then stopped himself.

This was not his place.

Samuel touched his cheek.

“I deserved that.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“You just said you found him.”

“I did.”

“WHERE?”

Lily grabbed Evelyn’s hand.

Evelyn stopped.

She looked down.

Her daughter was frightened.

Again.

Because of adults.

Again.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

She took one slow breath.

Then she crouched.

“Baby, I’m sorry.”

Lily whispered.

“Is Grandpa Peter alive?”

Evelyn could not answer.

Samuel did.

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked at him sharply.

Samuel immediately regretted it.

Lily stared.

“But Mommy said he died.”

Samuel knelt several feet away.

“Your mommy believed he died.”

“Why?”

Samuel looked at Evelyn.

“Because adults made terrible decisions.”

Lily frowned.

“That’s stupid.”

Despite everything, Julian almost laughed.

Thomas actually did.

One quiet, exhausted laugh.

Lily looked at Samuel.

“Where is he?”

Samuel stood.

“Near the river.”

Monroe stepped forward.

“Start talking.”

Samuel looked at her.

“I received a message while I was with Lily.”

“What message?”

Samuel pulled out his phone.

The screen was cracked.

Monroe took it.

There was a text from an unknown number.

COME ALONE.

PIER 19.

IF YOU WANT EVELYN TO LIVE.

Evelyn stared.

“When did you get this?”

“About forty minutes ago.”

“And you just left Lily?”

Samuel looked ashamed.

“Eleanor had arrived.”

Evelyn’s anger returned instantly.

“So you left my daughter with Eleanor.”

“I thought she was safer here.”

“Based on what?”

Samuel said nothing.

“Exactly.”

Monroe looked at the message.

“You went to Pier 19?”

“Yes.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

“That was incredibly stupid.”

“I know.”

“What happened?”

Samuel looked at Evelyn.

“I found Peter.”

Her heart pounded.

“What did he look like?”

“Older.”

Samuel swallowed.

“Thinner.”

“Was he hurt?”

“No.”

“Did he know who you were?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“What did he say?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Tell me.”

“He asked about you.”

Evelyn felt something break inside her.

“What did he ask?”

“If you were safe.”

Her eyes filled.

“And Lily?”

Samuel nodded.

“He asked about her too.”

Evelyn looked away.

She hated that those questions affected her.

Eight years.

If Peter was alive, he had missed eight years.

Birthdays.

Christmases.

Lily’s birth.

The hardest nights of Evelyn’s life.

Everything.

“Why didn’t he come home?”

Samuel looked at her.

“He said he couldn’t.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I know.”

“What did he say?”

Samuel took a breath.

“He said his death was the only reason you stayed alive.”

Thomas stared.

“Who was after him?”

Samuel looked at him.

“Not him.”

Evelyn froze.

“Me?”

Samuel nodded.

“Peter said someone discovered who Evelyn really was eight years ago.”

Eleanor.

Evelyn remembered.

Eleanor had admitted learning the truth eight years earlier.

The exact same year Peter supposedly died.

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“Eleanor.”

Samuel shook his head.

“Peter said Eleanor wasn’t the one who frightened him.”

“Then who?”

Samuel looked toward the laptop.

“The person Sarah named in the final recording.”

Evelyn turned.

The unfinished file.

Peter Carter is not his real name.

His real name is—

The knock had interrupted it.

Monroe looked at Samuel.

“Did Peter tell you his real name?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Samuel looked directly at her.

“Michael Hale.”

Thomas stumbled backward.

“No.”

Julian caught him.

“What?”

Thomas stared at Samuel.

“Michael Hale died when he was nineteen.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

Thomas looked terrified.

“He was Martin’s younger brother.”

Evelyn stared.

“Martin’s brother raised me?”

Thomas nodded slowly.

“Apparently.”

Julian frowned.

“Why would Sarah trust him?”

Thomas looked toward the window.

“Because Michael loved her.”

Evelyn froze.

“What?”

“Before Sarah married Peter Carter…”

Thomas stopped.

Then corrected himself.

“Before she married the man you knew as Peter Carter, Michael Hale had worked for Arthur.”

“My grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“He was security.”

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

“And he was in love with Sarah.”

Evelyn’s head spun.

“Was he my biological father?”

Thomas immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

Thomas hesitated.

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“How do you know?”

“Because Sarah told me who your father was.”

Silence.

Evelyn stared at him.

“You knew my mother?”

“Yes.”

“How well?”

“Well enough.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“She came to me three weeks before the fire.”

“Why?”

“She wanted help.”

“With what?”

“Getting you out of the country.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“She was that afraid?”

“Yes.”

“Who was my biological father?”

Thomas looked at Samuel.

Then Julian.

Then Evelyn.

“Arthur Carter had a son.”

Evelyn frowned.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“A son besides Sarah?”

Thomas nodded.

“His name was David.”

Evelyn stared.

“Nobody mentioned David.”

“Because Walter made sure his name disappeared from the company records.”

“Why?”

“David discovered the fraud before Sarah did.”

“What happened to him?”

Thomas whispered.

“He disappeared.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Everyone in my family disappears.”

Thomas said nothing.

“Was David my father?”

“No.”

Evelyn opened her eyes.

“Then why mention him?”

Thomas looked at Julian.

Because the answer involved the Whitmores.

Evelyn could see it.

“Tell me.”

Thomas whispered.

“David had a son.”

Evelyn frowned.

“That still doesn’t—”

Then she understood.

Her stomach turned.

“No.”

Thomas nodded.

“No.”

“Evelyn.”

“Don’t.”

Julian looked confused.

“What?”

Evelyn stared at Thomas.

“Say it.”

Thomas swallowed.

“Sarah’s biological father was Arthur Carter.”

“Yes.”

“Your biological father was not related to Arthur.”

Evelyn exhaled.

Thomas continued.

“But Walter spent years telling everyone otherwise because it gave him grounds to challenge Sarah’s marriage and inheritance.”

Evelyn stared.

“So who was my father?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Daniel Whitmore’s best friend.”

Julian froze.

“My father?”

Thomas nodded.

“His name was James Mercer.”

Julian’s face changed.

“I know that name.”

Thomas looked at him.

“You should.”

“He died with my father.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

Julian stared.

“The police report said there was only one body.”

“Exactly.”

Julian stopped breathing.

Thomas continued.

“James disappeared the same night Daniel died.”

Evelyn whispered.

“My biological father disappeared twenty-nine years ago.”

“Yes.”

“And my mother died a year later.”

“Yes.”

Lily squeezed Evelyn’s hand.

Evelyn looked down.

Too much.

This was too much for her daughter.

Monroe seemed to agree.

“We need to finish the recording.”

Evelyn nodded.

She sat beside Lily.

She pulled her daughter against her.

Then Monroe reopened SARAH_FINAL.

The audio resumed.

Sarah’s voice filled the room.

“Peter Carter is not his real name.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“His real name is Michael Hale.”

Samuel had told the truth.

Sarah continued.

“I asked Michael to take Evelyn.”

“He agreed.”

“He promised he would disappear.”

“But tonight I learned something Michael never told me.”

Thomas leaned closer.

Sarah’s breathing became shaky.

“Michael was working for Walter before he worked for my father.”

Evelyn froze.

Samuel stared at the laptop.

Sarah continued.

“He says he changed sides.”

“He says he wants to protect Evelyn.”

“I want to believe him.”

“But I found a payment.”

Monroe leaned closer.

“Walter paid Michael fifty thousand dollars three days before Arthur disappeared.”

Thomas whispered.

“Oh, no.”

Sarah continued.

“I confronted Michael.”

“He swears he didn’t hurt my father.”

“He says the money was for something else.”

“But he won’t tell me what.”

Evelyn’s chest tightened.

Sarah began crying.

“If Michael lied to me…”

Static.

Then her voice returned.

“If he was involved…”

A pause.

“Evelyn can never know.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn stared at the blank screen.

Peter.

Michael.

The man who had raised her.

The man who had supposedly died.

The man Sarah trusted with her life.

And possibly the man Walter paid before Arthur Carter disappeared.

Monroe looked at Samuel.

“What happened after you met him?”

Samuel’s face changed.

“He gave me something.”

“What?”

Samuel reached inside his jacket.

He pulled out a small black notebook.

Thomas stared.

“The ledger.”

Samuel nodded.

“Peter said this proves what the fifty thousand dollars was for.”

Evelyn reached for it.

Samuel hesitated.

Then handed it over.

She opened the first page.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Walter Whitmore.

Margaret Whitmore.

Robert Monroe.

Martin Hale.

Michael Hale.

Eleanor Whitmore.

And dozens more.

Evelyn turned pages.

Then stopped.

A payment.

$50,000.

MICHAEL HALE.

PURPOSE: EXTRACTION.

Evelyn frowned.

“Extraction?”

Thomas grabbed the notebook.

He read the next line.

His face changed.

Julian stepped closer.

“What?”

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

“The payment wasn’t to hurt Arthur.”

“Then what?”

Thomas turned the notebook around.

Beneath the payment was a handwritten note.

EXTRACT SARAH BENNETT AND CHILD BEFORE WALTER MOVES.

Evelyn stared.

Michael had been paid to save them.

Not kill Arthur.

Samuel whispered.

“Peter was telling the truth.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

Then Monroe’s phone rang.

She answered.

“Monroe.”

Her expression changed immediately.

“When?”

She looked at Evelyn.

“Are you sure?”

Julian stood.

“What?”

Monroe ended the call.

She looked at Samuel.

“Pier 19?”

“Yes.”

Monroe turned toward Evelyn.

“They found a body.”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

“Peter?”

Monroe shook her head.

“No.”

Thomas whispered.

“Who?”

May you like

Monroe looked directly at him.

“Martin Hale.”
