Chapter 9 - THE SECOND RECORDING

Evelyn was already running.

“Evelyn!”

Julian followed.

She did not stop.

She raced through the vault.

Up the concrete stairs.

Into the rain.

Monroe shouted behind her.

“Wait for an officer!”

Evelyn ignored her.

Her daughter was at the hotel.

Wearing a blue dress.

And a dying man had just connected that dress to a recording people had killed to hide.

Julian caught up beside her.

“I’m driving.”

“Give me the keys.”

“You’re shaking.”

“Give me the damn keys.”

He did.

No argument.

Evelyn drove.

Too fast.

Julian held the dashboard.

Neither spoke.

Thomas and Monroe followed in another vehicle.

Evelyn called Samuel.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

“Pick up.”

Again.

Voicemail.

Her heart pounded.

She called the hotel.

A receptionist answered.

“This is Evelyn Carter.”

Her voice shook.

“My daughter Lily Carter is in the ballroom with Dr. Samuel Bennett.”

“One moment.”

“No.”

Evelyn tightened her grip on the wheel.

“Do not put me on hold.”

The receptionist froze.

“Ma’am?”

“Find my daughter.”

“I’ll contact security.”

“NOW.”

The line went quiet.

Julian looked at Evelyn.

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

Thirty seconds.

Then the receptionist returned.

“Ms. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“Security is checking.”

“Checking what?”

“Dr. Bennett and your daughter are not in the ballroom.”

Evelyn almost drove through a red light.

“What?”

“They may have moved to another room.”

“Find them.”

“We are.”

Julian took out his phone.

He called hotel security directly.

“This is Julian Whitmore.”

His voice changed.

Cold.

Controlled.

“Find Lily Carter.”

He listened.

“No, I do not care what Eleanor told you.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“What?”

Julian’s expression hardened.

He put the phone on speaker.

The security manager spoke.

“Mrs. Whitmore instructed us to move the child away from the ballroom.”

Evelyn felt rage explode through her.

“WHERE?”

The manager froze.

“Ms. Carter?”

“Where is my daughter?”

“Mrs. Whitmore arranged a private suite on the fourteenth floor.”

“Is Samuel with her?”

“He was.”

“Was?”

Julian leaned toward the phone.

“What does that mean?”

“He left approximately twelve minutes ago.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

“Who is with Lily?”

Silence.

Evelyn shouted.

“WHO IS WITH MY DAUGHTER?”

“A hotel employee.”

“Name.”

“Marissa Lane.”

Julian frowned.

“I don’t know her.”

Neither did Evelyn.

“Get security to that room.”

“They’re already going.”

Evelyn accelerated.

Rain hammered the windshield.

They reached the hotel nine minutes later.

Evelyn barely stopped the car.

She ran inside.

Julian followed.

Guests had spilled into the lobby.

Police officers moved everywhere.

Evelyn headed for the elevator.

Too slow.

She took the stairs.

Fourteen floors.

Julian followed.

By floor seven, he was breathing hard.

Evelyn did not slow down.

Floor ten.

Twelve.

Fourteen.

She burst through the stairwell door.

Two security guards stood outside Suite 1418.

Evelyn’s heart stopped.

“Where is Lily?”

One guard raised his hands.

“She’s safe.”

Evelyn shoved past him.

She opened the door.

“LILY!”

“Mommy!”

Lily ran from the bedroom.

Evelyn dropped to her knees.

She caught her.

Held her.

Checked her face.

Arms.

Hands.

Everything.

“Are you okay?”

Lily nodded.

“Did anyone hurt you?”

“No.”

“Did anyone touch you?”

Lily shook her head.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

She hugged her so tightly Lily squeaked.

“Mommy.”

“I’m sorry.”

Evelyn loosened her arms.

“I’m sorry.”

Julian stopped in the doorway.

Relief crossed his face.

Then Evelyn saw the woman standing near the window.

Mid-thirties.

Hotel uniform.

Marissa.

Evelyn stood.

“Who are you?”

The woman raised her hands.

“Marissa Lane.”

“Why are you with my daughter?”

“Mrs. Whitmore asked me to stay with her.”

“Where is Eleanor?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is Samuel?”

“I don’t know.”

Lily tugged Evelyn’s sleeve.

“Mommy.”

Evelyn crouched.

“Yes?”

“Grandma Eleanor came here.”

Evelyn froze.

“When?”

“Before the doctor left.”

“What did she do?”

Lily thought.

“She fixed my dress.”

Evelyn’s heart stopped.

“Where?”

“The back.”

Evelyn slowly looked at Lily’s blue dress.

There was a small bow at the waist.

Evelyn turned her around.

Something had been sewn beneath the bow.

A tiny bulge.

Julian saw it.

“Don’t touch it.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Why?”

“Evidence.”

He called Monroe.

“She was right.”

Evelyn looked at Lily.

“Did Eleanor say anything?”

Lily nodded.

“She said this belonged to you.”

Evelyn’s breathing changed.

“What did?”

“She didn’t say.”

“What else?”

“She said when you were ready, you would understand why she couldn’t tell you.”

Evelyn stood.

“That woman is unbelievable.”

Julian looked away.

Evelyn noticed.

“You’re defending her?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I think she knew Martin had the real recording.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“And she hid it on my six-year-old?”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“After my daughter was already framed by having something planted on her?”

“I know.”

“No.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You don’t know.”

Julian did not retreat.

“My daughter spent tonight being treated like a hiding place for adults’ secrets.”

“I know.”

“Your fiancée put evidence on her.”

“I know.”

“Your mother put evidence on her.”

“I know.”

“And you started the night by calling her a thief.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Evelyn’s voice cracked.

“She is a child.”

“I know.”

“Then why does everyone keep using her?”

Julian had no answer.

Monroe arrived minutes later.

She carefully cut the stitching beneath Lily’s bow.

Inside was a tiny digital memory card.

Not a cassette.

Thomas arrived behind her.

He stared at it.

“That’s not thirty years old.”

“No.”

Monroe looked at Evelyn.

“Someone transferred the recording.”

“Eleanor?”

“Probably.”

Evelyn looked at Lily.

“No more secrets in front of her.”

Monroe nodded.

“We can listen somewhere else.”

Lily immediately grabbed Evelyn.

“No.”

Evelyn looked down.

“I’m staying with you.”

Lily shook her head.

“I want to hear Grandma Sarah.”

Evelyn’s heart broke.

“Baby.”

“She’s my grandma too.”

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn crouched.

“This recording might say frightening things.”

“I already heard frightening things.”

Julian looked away.

Lily continued.

“I want to know why everybody keeps lying.”

Evelyn stared at her daughter.

Six years old.

Too young for this.

But also the person who had told the truth when every adult around her had chosen convenience.

Evelyn nodded.

“Okay.”

They moved into the suite’s living room.

Monroe inserted the card into a police laptop.

Several audio files appeared.

SARAH_01.

SARAH_02.

SARAH_FINAL.

Thomas stared.

“Three recordings.”

Evelyn clicked the first.

Her mother’s voice filled the room.

“My name is Sarah Bennett Carter.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

This recording was clearer.

“I have copied everything.”

“Walter’s accounts.”

“The property transfers.”

“The bribes.”

“The payments to police.”

Monroe’s face tightened.

Sarah continued.

“But Walter is not working alone.”

Julian stared at the laptop.

Evelyn’s heartbeat increased.

Sarah’s voice trembled.

“I trusted the wrong person.”

“I told her where I kept the original ledgers.”

Her.

Everyone froze.

A woman.

Sarah continued.

“She told Walter.”

Thomas whispered.

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You know.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

“You know who she means.”

“I hope I don’t.”

Evelyn clicked SARAH_02.

Static.

Then crying.

Sarah.

“I moved Evelyn tonight.”

“She’s with Peter.”

“Samuel knows nothing.”

Evelyn looked at the door.

Samuel.

Sarah continued.

“That’s safer.”

“I need to get the brooch to Martin.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

Sarah’s voice grew quieter.

“Martin is the only Whitmore I still trust.”

Julian frowned.

“Whitmore?”

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

“You said Martin was Eleanor’s brother.”

Thomas nodded.

“He was.”

“Then why Carter?”

“Martin changed his name after Arthur disappeared.”

Sarah continued.

“If I don’t survive tonight, Martin knows what to do.”

A door slammed in the recording.

Sarah gasped.

Then another woman’s voice appeared.

Faint.

Almost impossible to hear.

Sarah said.

“You.”

The woman answered.

“You should have left this alone.”

Evelyn leaned closer.

Julian stared at Thomas.

Thomas looked sick.

Sarah said.

“You told Walter.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were going to destroy everything.”

“He stole from my father.”

“Your father was going to destroy this family first.”

Sarah’s breathing became frantic.

“You knew about the money.”

“I knew enough.”

“You knew Walter threatened Arthur.”

Silence.

Sarah whispered.

“You knew what happened to Daniel.”

Julian froze.

“My father?”

The woman answered.

“Daniel made his choice.”

Julian stood.

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

He stared at the laptop.

Sarah shouted.

“He was your own son!”

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Evelyn’s skin went cold.

Julian whispered.

“What?”

Thomas covered his mouth.

The woman on the recording answered.

“My son stopped being my son when he chose strangers over his family.”

Julian stumbled backward.

Evelyn stared at him.

Daniel’s mother.

Julian’s grandmother.

Walter Whitmore’s wife.

Thomas whispered her name.

“Margaret.”

Julian looked at him.

“Grandma Margaret?”

Thomas nodded slowly.

“She helped Walter.”

Sarah’s recording continued.

“You let them kill Daniel.”

Margaret’s voice was cold.

“Daniel was weak.”

Julian closed his eyes.

Tears appeared.

“He was going to expose us.”

Sarah whispered.

“And Arthur?”

Margaret did not answer.

Sarah repeated.

“What did Walter do to my father?”

Margaret laughed softly.

“You still think Walter was the one who handled Arthur?”

Thomas went completely white.

Evelyn stared at the laptop.

“What?”

Sarah whispered.

“Who?”

Margaret answered.

“I did.”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

The recording crackled.

Then Sarah screamed.

The audio cut.

Lily buried her face against Evelyn.

Evelyn immediately stopped playback.

Nobody spoke for almost a minute.

Julian sat down.

His hands covered his face.

Thomas leaned against the wall.

Monroe stared at the screen.

Evelyn looked at the third file.

SARAH_FINAL.

Her hand hovered over it.

Thomas whispered.

“Don’t.”

Evelyn turned.

“Why?”

Thomas looked terrified.

“If Sarah made that after Margaret confronted her…”

He swallowed.

“Then somebody survived that room.”

Evelyn clicked the file.

Static.

Breathing.

Then Sarah whispered.

“She thinks I’m dead.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Sarah had survived the confrontation.

At least temporarily.

“I got out through the basement.”

“I’m hurt.”

“I don’t have much time.”

Lily held Evelyn’s hand.

Sarah continued.

“Margaret confessed.”

“I recorded enough.”

“But there’s something worse.”

Evelyn leaned closer.

“Walter and Margaret didn’t arrange the fire.”

Thomas frowned.

“What?”

Sarah continued.

“Someone else did.”

Monroe stared at the screen.

Sarah whispered.

“Someone who knew where Evelyn was.”

Evelyn felt cold.

“No.”

“They followed Peter.”

“They know he has her.”

Evelyn grabbed Lily.

Sarah began crying.

“I trusted him.”

Evelyn froze.

“I trusted him with my daughter.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“What?”

Sarah’s breathing became frantic.

“If Peter hears this…”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Sarah continued.

“Take Evelyn and run.”

Evelyn stared at the laptop.

“No.”

“He isn’t who he says he is.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

Sarah whispered.

“Peter Carter is not his real name.”

Evelyn’s world tilted.

The man who raised her.

The man who taught her to ride a bicycle.

The man who sat beside her bed when she had pneumonia.

The man who walked her into kindergarten.

The man she buried eight years ago.

Sarah’s voice continued.

“His real name is—”

A knock sounded at the suite door.

Everyone froze.

Three slow knocks.

Monroe immediately closed the laptop.

She drew her weapon.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

Another three knocks.

Julian moved Lily behind him.

Evelyn immediately pulled her back to herself.

Monroe approached the door.

“Police.”

Silence.

She looked through the peephole.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Evelyn whispered.

Monroe slowly lowered her weapon.

Then she unlocked the door.

A man stood outside.

Dr. Samuel Bennett.

His shirt was wet.

His face was bruised.

Blood ran from his forehead.

Evelyn stared at him.

“Where were you?”

Samuel looked at her.

“I found Peter.”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Julian stared.

Thomas whispered.

“That’s impossible.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“My father is dead.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

May you like

His voice broke.

“Peter Carter is alive.”
