Chapter 2 - THE SILVER HANDBAG

Nobody moved.
The quartet remained silent.
The ballroom doors remained open behind Evelyn.
Even the security guards stopped waiting for instructions.
Eleanor Whitmore slowly picked up her handbag.
“You have completely lost your mind.”
“Open it.”
“You do not give me orders.”
Evelyn looked at Lily.
Then back at Eleanor.
“You were perfectly comfortable ordering strangers to search my daughter.”
Eleanor’s lips tightened.
“That was because she had reason to be suspected.”
“And now I have reason to suspect your bag.”
Julian laughed.
“This is pathetic.”
Evelyn ignored him.
Lily whispered.
“Mommy…”
Evelyn squeezed her hand.
“It’s okay.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“This has gone far enough.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“You’re right.”
Vanessa seemed surprised.
Evelyn continued.
“So let’s end it.”
She pointed at Eleanor’s handbag.
“Open the bag.”
A man near the front tables spoke.
“She has a point.”
Several guests turned.
The man was Dr. Samuel Bennett, chairman of the children’s hospital board.
Eleanor’s expression changed.
“Samuel.”
“You asked for Evelyn to be searched.”
Dr. Bennett adjusted his glasses.
“Fairness would suggest the same standard should apply to everyone.”
Julian scoffed.
“This isn’t a courtroom.”
“No.”
Dr. Bennett looked at Lily.
“It’s a charity event supposedly organized for children.”
That landed.
Hard.
Phones were already appearing.
Guests were recording.
Eleanor noticed.
For the first time that evening, embarrassment touched her face.
“Fine.”
She placed the handbag on the table.
“Watch carefully.”
She opened it.
A compact mirror.
Lipstick.
Reading glasses.
An envelope.
A phone.
A small perfume bottle.
Nothing else.
Julian smiled.
“Happy?”
Evelyn did not answer.
Lily looked confused.
“But I saw her…”
Vanessa immediately laughed.
“Children imagine things.”
Evelyn’s head snapped toward her.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa lifted both hands.
“I’m simply saying—”
“Don’t call my daughter a liar.”
Julian stepped closer.
“She already lied about stealing.”
Lily flinched.
Evelyn saw it.
Something inside her went cold.
“She never lied.”
“Then where’s the brooch?”
A voice came from behind them.
“Maybe the cameras know.”
Everyone turned.
Caleb.
The waiter.
He stood beside the service corridor.
His hands were shaking.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Julian frowned.
“What cameras?”
Caleb swallowed.
“The ballroom security cameras.”
Eleanor looked at the ceiling.
Four black cameras were positioned around the ballroom.
Julian’s confidence weakened.
Evelyn noticed immediately.
“Good.”
She looked at security.
“Pull the footage.”
Julian interrupted.
“No.”
The room went silent.
Evelyn slowly turned toward him.
“No?”
“This is a private event.”
“You just publicly accused a six-year-old of stealing eighty thousand dollars.”
Julian looked at the guests holding phones.
“This doesn’t need to become a spectacle.”
Evelyn almost smiled.
“You made it a spectacle when you hit me.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Julian is right.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“Of course he is.”
“The footage belongs to the foundation.”
Dr. Bennett spoke again.
“Actually, it belongs to the hotel.”
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
“And I happen to know the hotel manager.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
Vanessa looked toward the exit again.
Evelyn caught it.
So did Caleb.
“Please.”
Caleb’s voice was quiet.
“Check the footage.”
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Why are you still standing here?”
Caleb stiffened.
“I work here.”
“Then go work.”
Dr. Bennett frowned.
“Vanessa.”
She forced a smile.
“I’m sorry.”
But Caleb did not leave.
Instead, he looked directly at Evelyn.
“There’s something else.”
Julian’s face darkened.
“What?”
Caleb hesitated.
Vanessa spoke sharply.
“Caleb.”
That was enough.
Evelyn looked between them.
“You know each other.”
“No.”
Vanessa answered too quickly.
Caleb stared at the floor.
Evelyn approached him.
“How do you know Vanessa?”
“I don’t.”
“Then why does she know your name?”
Silence.
Vanessa froze.
Julian slowly turned toward his fiancée.
Eleanor stared at her.
“Vanessa?”
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“He’s wearing a name tag.”
Everyone looked.
Caleb’s black vest had no name tag.
Evelyn felt the entire room shift.
Julian’s voice lowered.
“How do you know his name?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I must have heard someone say it.”
“No one said it.”
Evelyn had.
But only after Vanessa had first reacted to him.
Caleb looked terrified.
Julian stepped toward him.
“Who are you?”
Caleb backed away.
“I’m nobody.”
“Who are you?”
“Julian.”
Vanessa touched his arm.
He pulled away from her.
“Don’t.”
That single word changed everything.
Vanessa stared at him.
Julian looked at Caleb again.
“Talk.”
Caleb’s eyes moved toward Evelyn.
Then Lily.
Then Vanessa.
“I was paid.”
The ballroom erupted.
Questions exploded from every direction.
“Paid for what?”
“By whom?”
“What happened?”
Julian grabbed Caleb by the front of his vest.
“Who paid you?”
Security immediately intervened.
“Sir.”
Julian released him.
Caleb stumbled backward.
Vanessa was white now.
Evelyn moved Lily behind her.
“Tell us.”
Caleb took a breath.
“I was paid to move something.”
Julian’s voice was almost a whisper.
“What?”
Caleb looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head once.
Barely noticeable.
Caleb saw it.
Then something changed in his expression.
Maybe courage.
Maybe exhaustion.
“The brooch.”
Julian stared at him.
“You moved my grandmother’s brooch?”
Caleb nodded.
“Where?”
Caleb pointed toward the ballroom.
“I was supposed to put it in someone’s coat.”
Evelyn already knew.
“Mine.”
Caleb looked at her.
“Yes.”
Lily gasped.
Evelyn felt sick.
Julian looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa shook her head.
“This is insane.”
Caleb continued.
“I couldn’t do it.”
“Why?”
Caleb looked at Lily.
“Because the little girl was there.”
Nobody spoke.
“She was talking about a drawing she made for her mom.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“And I realized what would happen if I planted it.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“So where did you put it?”
Caleb swallowed.
“I didn’t.”
Julian shouted.
“You just said you moved it!”
“I took the envelope.”
“What envelope?”
Caleb looked confused.
“The brooch was supposed to be inside a white envelope.”
Evelyn remembered Eleanor’s handbag.
There had been an envelope inside.
Every head turned.
Eleanor looked down at her bag.
Slowly.
Her hand began to tremble.
Evelyn pointed.
“That envelope.”
Eleanor pulled it out.
Vanessa moved.
Not toward the door.
Toward Eleanor.
“Don’t open that.”
Everyone froze.
Julian stared at her.
“Why?”
Vanessa realized what she had said.
Too late.
Eleanor looked at the envelope.
Then at Vanessa.
“What is this?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Eleanor tore it open.
A folded document fell onto the table.
No brooch.
Julian grabbed the paper.
His eyes moved across the first page.
His expression changed.
Evelyn watched the color leave his face.
“What is it?”
Julian did not answer.
Eleanor took the document.
She read three lines.
Then looked at Vanessa.
“You forged my signature.”
Vanessa backed away.
“No.”
Eleanor held up the document.
“This transfers twelve million dollars from the Whitmore Family Foundation.”
Gasps erupted.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That isn’t mine.”
“Your name is on the receiving corporation.”
“I’ve never seen it before.”
Caleb whispered.
“She has.”
Vanessa spun around.
“Shut up.”
Caleb flinched.
Julian stepped between them.
“You paid him?”
“No.”
Caleb reached into his pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
“I kept the messages.”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Julian extended his hand.
“Give me the phone.”
Caleb hesitated.
Then handed it over.
Julian opened the messages.
Evelyn watched his eyes move.
His expression became unreadable.
“What do they say?”
Julian looked at Vanessa.
“You told him to place the brooch in Evelyn’s coat.”
“No.”
“You told him exactly where her coat would be.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Julian, listen to me.”
“You told him she had to be humiliated publicly.”
Evelyn felt Lily squeeze her hand.
Julian kept reading.
Then he stopped.
His face changed again.
This time it was not anger.
It was confusion.
“What?”
Eleanor moved closer.
“What is it?”
Julian turned the phone toward her.
“There’s another message.”
Eleanor read it.
Her lips parted.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“What does it say?”
Neither answered.
“Julian.”
He finally looked at Evelyn.
“The message says the brooch was never supposed to remain in your coat.”
“What does that mean?”
Caleb answered.
“It was supposed to be found.”
“Obviously.”
“No.”
Caleb shook his head.
“After it was found, someone else was supposed to take it.”
Evelyn frowned.
“Who?”
Caleb looked toward the ballroom doors.
A man was standing there.
Tall.
Gray suit.
Silver hair.
He had arrived sometime during the confrontation.
Eleanor saw him.
Her face became completely white.
“Thomas?”
Julian turned.
“Uncle Thomas?”
Thomas Whitmore walked slowly into the ballroom.
Nobody stopped him.
He looked at Vanessa.
Then Caleb.
Then Evelyn.
Finally, his eyes settled on Lily.
“Where is the brooch?”
Julian stepped toward him.
“What are you doing here?”
Thomas ignored the question.
“I asked where the brooch is.”
“It’s missing.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
For one second, he looked genuinely afraid.
Then he whispered something Evelyn never expected.
“That brooch isn’t worth eighty thousand dollars.”
Julian frowned.
“Yes, it is.”
Thomas shook his head.
“You still don’t understand.”
He looked at Eleanor.
“The diamond is fake.”
Silence.
Eleanor stared at him.
“What?”
Thomas’s voice dropped.
May you like
“The brooch is a key.”
And somewhere behind them, a glass shattered.
