Chapter 1 - THE HANGER IN HER HAND

The wooden hanger was already falling when I hit the living-room doorway.

“Dad, help us!”

Six-year-old Lily pressed herself against the wall, shaking so hard the framed family photographs rattled behind her.

My son, Ethan, crouched beneath the coffee table with both arms over his head.

And Vanessa stood between them in a black satin dress, her hand raised for another strike.

I crossed the marble floor before I understood I was moving.

“Get away from them!”

I caught her wrist.

The hanger clattered across the floor.

Vanessa stumbled backward, more shocked than hurt.

“Michael, what are you doing?”

I dropped beside my children.

Ethan buried his face in my chest.

Lily locked both arms around my neck.

Their bodies trembled against mine.

I checked Ethan’s shoulders and arms.

Dark bruises were already forming beneath his sleeve.

“What did you do to them?” I asked.

Vanessa straightened slowly.

“They were misbehaving.”

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You always spoil them, Michael.”

I looked at the hanger on the floor.

Then at the red mark across Lily’s cheek.

“You call this discipline?”

“They need rules.”

“They need protection.”

“From me?” Vanessa gave a bitter laugh. “I’m the only one trying to raise them.”

Ethan flinched at the sound of her voice.

That small movement told me more than any explanation could.

I pulled both children closer.

“How long has this been happening?”

Neither answered.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Don’t encourage their drama.”

Lily’s fingers tightened around my collar.

Then she whispered against my neck.

“Daddy, she said Mommy didn’t die in an accident.”

Every muscle in my body went rigid.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

I lowered my voice.

“What exactly did she say?”

Lily looked past me at Vanessa.

“She said Mommy found the papers.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

I stood between her and the children.

“What papers?”

Lily swallowed.

May you like

“The ones under your office floor.”

And behind me, Vanessa quietly reached for her phone.
