Chapter 11 - THE GIRL WHO SPOKE

The metal panel crashed onto the boardroom floor.

Every head turned.

Lily climbed out.

“Get away from my brother!”

Vanessa froze.

I dropped behind her.

Daniel and Robert followed.

Ethan ran to me.

I lifted him into my arms.

The chairman stood.

“What is the meaning of this?”

“The meaning,” Robert said, “is that you are voting based on fabricated evidence.”

Vanessa pointed at me.

“He attacked me again.”

Lily stepped onto the conference table.

“No, he didn’t.”

Her small voice cut through the room.

“She hit us.”

“She told us Dad would disappear.”

“She kidnapped Ethan.”

Vanessa laughed.

“She’s a frightened child.”

“So am I,” Lily said.

“And I still know you’re lying.”

Robert connected his tablet to the screen.

The dashcam footage played.

Rachel’s car.

The red umbrella.

Vanessa’s face.

Henry blocking the road.

The confrontation.

The shove.

The boardroom fell silent.

Vanessa backed toward the door.

“That video is fake.”

The chairman stared at her.

“It has the original timestamp.”

Robert displayed forensic verification from the district attorney.

Then Maria’s recorded confession appeared.

Vanessa turned toward me.

“You think this makes you innocent?”

“Innocent of what?”

“Neglect.”

Her voice sharpened.

“You left those children with me every day.”

The accusation struck because it was true.

I had trusted her.

I had missed the fear.

I had chosen work over questions.

Ethan wrapped his arms around my neck.

Lily reached for my hand.

Before I could answer, the lights dimmed.

The boardroom doors locked.

A red warning flashed on the wall.

FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM ARMED.

Vanessa held a remote.

“If I lose,” she said, “Rachel’s children inherit ashes.”
