Chapter 14 - RACHEL’S LAST SECRET

The letter had not been written after Rachel’s death.

It had been delivered later.

Robert explained that Rachel created a delayed legal package before the crash.

If she died, the letters would be released in stages.

The final letter had been held because Robert went into hiding.

I opened it with the children beside me.

My sweet Lily and Ethan,

If you are reading this, someone finally told the truth.

Do not let what happened to me teach you to be afraid of love.

Fear is how people like Vanessa control a house.

Love is how you take it back.

The letter contained instructions for the family trust.

Rachel had transferred voting control to the children.

I would serve only as temporary guardian.

When Lily turned twenty-one, she would choose whether to run the company, sell her shares, or convert them into a foundation.

Ethan would have the same choice.

Rachel had protected them from everyone.

Including me.

At first, that hurt.

Then I understood.

She had known grief might make me vulnerable.

And she had been right.

I had married the first person who promised to make the pain quiet.

That mistake nearly destroyed our children.

Three months later, Vanessa and Henry went to trial.

Lily testified by recorded statement.

Ethan did not have to enter the courtroom.

The dashcam footage, financial records, and medical evidence left little room for doubt.

Vanessa was convicted.

Henry was convicted.

The judge called their actions “a campaign of greed disguised as family.”

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded us.

“Mr. Carter, will you remain CEO?”

“No.”

The crowd went silent.

“I spent too many years believing money could protect my children.”

“It couldn’t.”

“I’m stepping down.”

Lily squeezed my hand.

“What will you do now?” a reporter asked.

I looked at both children.

“I’m going home.”

But as we turned away, Detective Monroe approached.

“We found something in Vanessa’s storage unit.”

She handed me a small video camera.

May you like

“It contains recordings from inside your house.”

The newest file was dated the night before I came home early.
