Chapter 22 - THE MARRIAGE AFTER
Emma and I almost separated.
Not because love ended.
Because she could not stop seeing the man who had dismissed her.
I could not stop becoming defensive.
Counseling helped until it didn’t.
Then a weekend apart.
Then another.
One night Emma said:
“When I told you your mother was manipulating the trust, you said I was making it personal.”
“I remember.”
“She made it personal by drugging me.”
“I know.”
“You always say you know.”
I almost smiled.
Didn’t.
“What do you need me to say?”
“The truth.”
So:
“I chose the comfort of believing my mother over the discomfort of investigating her.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“Thank you.”
Then my turn.
“You kept the Ridgeway evidence from me.”
“Yes.”
“Because you expected me to fail you.”
“Yes.”
“That hurt.”
“I know.”
No easy winner.
We rebuilt communication rules.
No family financial matter handled by one spouse alone.
Independent counsel where conflicts exist.
No “later” for serious concerns.
No using money as proof of loyalty.
No relatives with unrestricted keys.
Basic.
Hard-earned.
We stayed married.
Not because trauma made us stronger.
