Chapter 26 - VINCENT WITHOUT THE ARMOR

I sold Hale Sentinel at fifty-eight.

Not because company failed.

Because I was tired.

A national risk-management firm acquired majority control.

Employees kept jobs.

I retained a small stake.

Then sold most later.

I had spent decades walking into rooms with people deciding whether I was dangerous.

Suit.

Quiet voice.

Controlled posture.

Someone once called me mafia handsome in a magazine profile.

Emma cut out the line and framed it.

I hated her.

Lily loved it.

At retirement dinner, she gave a speech.

“My father looks terrifying.”

Laughter.

“He is.”

More.

“But the bravest thing I ever saw him do was ask my therapist how to stop trying to fix everything.”

I covered my face.

Emma applauded.

Traitors.

Then Lily said:

“When I was six, I thought Dad opened the freezer because he was stronger than the lock.”

The room quieted.

“I know now that the harder part came after. He had to believe me even though the person I accused was his mother.”

My throat closed.

“That mattered more.”

Later I told her:

“You ruined my reputation.”

“You’re welcome.”

She hugged me.

My daughter had grown tall.

Warm.

May you like

Alive.

That was enough.
