CHAPTER 11: THE FROZEN BORDER

The winds blowing across the airstrip near the Polish-Belarusian border carried the sharp scent of pine needles, aviation fuel, and impending snow.

In a secluded hangar illuminated only by yellow halogen work lights, a lone, blacked-out transport plane sat dripping condensation onto the concrete floor. Outside, the night sky was a heavy sheet of slate, masking the arrival of the private charter that had cut through European airspace without registering its full manifest.

Inside the hangar's office, Lorenzo stood leaning over a steel map table. A heavy shearling coat hung broad off his shoulders, the dark wool stark against his pale, focused face. Across from him, Marcus was laying out tactical schematics—detailed floor plans of an old Soviet-era sanatorium nestled deep in the Bialowieza Forest.

"The Voronoi don't operate like the families back home, Lorenzo," Marcus cautioned, his voice low as he traced a thick red line across the map. "They aren't a family built on bloodlines or neighborhood fealty. They are ex-intelligence, military contractors, and asset liquidators. They treat Emma like an uncollected ledger item."

"Then we liquidate them first," Lorenzo said. His tone wasn't raised, but it carried that familiar, terrifying stillness—a quiet force that made even the seasoned mercenaries standing guard by the hangar doors shift uncomfortably.

"We have two teams on the perimeter," Marcus continued, tapping a series of marked insertion points. "Former Polish GROM operators. They don't ask questions; they just want the payout. But once we cross that tree line, we’re off the grid. No Italian embassy, no corrupt police chiefs to scrub the scene. If we drop there, nobody comes looking."

Lorenzo didn't answer right away. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper—a drawing Emma had scribbled on the flight from Naples. It was a chaotic swirl of yellow and blue crayon depicting three figures holding hands under a oversized sun. He stared at it for three seconds before folding it back carefully and placing it against his heart, right next to his shoulder holster.

"Isabella and the girl are secure in the Krakow safehouse?" Lorenzo asked.

"Guarded by eight of our best Sicilians and three layers of encrypted biometrics," Marcus confirmed. "She didn't want you to go, Boss."

"She knows why I'm going," Lorenzo replied, picking up a heavy, customized suppressed pistol from the table, racking the slide with a sharp, metallic clack. "If the Voronoi hold the ledger to my daughter's life, I'm going to burn the ledger—and the hands holding it."
