CHAPTER 13: THE SANCTUARY OF PALERMO

The Sicilian sun beat down on the golden limestone of the DeLuca estate, baking the air until it tasted of salt, pine resin, and blooming orange blossoms. High on the hills overlooking the sparkling blue curve of the Gulf of Palermo, the estate stood not as a fortress, but as a kingdom reclaimed.
A high stone wall still surrounded the property, and discreet guards still walked the perimeter with sharp eyes under the brims of their caps. But inside the courtyard, the suffocating atmosphere of fear that had hovered over the family for nearly a year had vanished.
Lorenzo stood on the wide stone terrace, leaning against the wrought-iron railing with a cup of fresh espresso in hand. He wore a loose linen shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal his forearms, where the fresh scars of winter fights in the north were beginning to fade under the warm Mediterranean sun.
Behind him, the heavy oak doors swung open.
Isabella stepped out onto the terrace. She wore a simple white summer dress that caught the sea breeze, her auburn hair tied loosely back. The hollows in her cheeks were completely gone, replaced by a radiant health, and her green eyes held a soft, profound stillness.
She walked up beside Lorenzo, resting her head against his shoulder. He immediately wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close and kissing the crown of her head.
"Marcus just finished the morning report from Milan," Isabella murmured, looking out at the glittering sea. "The northern families signed the new trade pacts. No pushback. No questions."
"They know better now," Lorenzo replied softly. "The Voronoi network dissolved the moment the servers went dark. The syndicates understand that the DeLuca family isn't looking for expand power anymore—we are protecting our own."
A chorus of small, energetic footsteps pattered across the stone tiles.
"Daddy! Look!"
Three-year-old Emma came sprinting toward them, holding a clumsy bouquet of wild yellow daisies she had picked from the estate garden, her hands covered in dark soil. Right behind her, walking with a watchful, patient smile, was Sophia—no longer a terrified maid hiding in the shadows, but a trusted part of the household, completely free from the debts that had once bound her to Julian.
Lorenzo let out a low laugh, kneeling down as Emma threw her arms around his neck, smearing a smudge of mud across his clean shirt. He didn't care. He lifted her easily into his arms, tossing her gently into the air until her bright laughter filled the entire courtyard.
Isabella smiled, taking one of the messy daisies from her daughter’s hand and tucking it into Lorenzo’s lapel.
Marcus stepped out onto the terrace a moment later, holding a folder under his arm. He paused, seeing the three of them framed against the endless horizon of the sea and sky. For the first time in as long as he could remember, Marcus didn't open the folder. He simply slipped it into his jacket, nodded respectfully to his Don, and took a step back, letting the quiet moment belong entirely to the family.
Lorenzo looked out over the cliffside, holding his daughter tightly against his chest while his wife rested her hand over his.

The grief was buried. The shadows were burned away. The blood had been paid in full.
And for the first time in his life, Lorenzo DeLuca was finally at peace.
