Chapter 6

Chapter 6: Shadows at the Top
The elevator ascended in absolute silence, the digital floor indicator climbing rapidly toward the 80th-floor penthouse.
Mariana’s gaze remained fixed on the blinking red light emanating from the encrypted drive inside her bag. The pulse was rhythmic, steady—like a ticking countdown.
"Gabriel..." Mariana spoke into the phone, her voice dropping to a icy whisper. "You’re supposed to be dead."
A low, amused laugh echoed through the receiver. Gabriel Escalante—her half-brother, the ruthless prodigy who had vanished after losing the succession battle five years ago—sounded entirely untroubled.
"Dead? No, sister. Just patient," Gabriel replied softly. "Did you really think our father gave you full control of Escalante Global out of love? He used you as a vault. He knew if he handed the master security key directly to me, the board would tear the empire apart. So he let you play the quiet, humble wife to a pathetic middle-class CEO while hiding the keys to the entire global treasury in plain sight."
The elevator chimed softly. The heavy brass doors slid open to reveal the lavish, sunlit executive penthouse.
"Andrew Morrison was never your husband, Mariana," Gabriel’s voice purred with toxic satisfaction. "He was my decoy. Every insult, every humiliation, every push to drive you to your limit... it was all engineered to force your hand. We needed you angry enough to activate Protocol Zero."
Mariana stepped out onto the marble floor of the penthouse. Across the room, standing before the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the skyline, was a tall figure in a tailored charcoal suit.
He turned slowly.
It wasn't her father.
It was Julian—the trusted Chief Legal Counsel who had stood by her side for years.
Julian held a sleek black tablet in his hand, his expression cold and devoid of the deference he had shown her just minutes ago on the red carpet. He lowered his phone from his ear.
"It was never personal, Miss Escalante," Julian said quietly, setting the tablet on the glass desk between them. "Your father built an empire, but Gabriel knows how to rule it. On that tablet is the transfer authorization triggered the second you plugged your YubiKey into the mainframe this morning. You didn't bankrupt the Morrisons to reclaim your power..."

Julian smiled, a sharp, predatory expression.
"...You just transferred 80% of Escalante Global's liquidity into Gabriel's offshore accounts."
