Chapter 8: Checkmate in the Dark

Mariana reached into her white suit jacket and pulled out a small, unadorned silver pen. She clicked the top once.

The red blinking light on the black drive inside her purse instantly turned a solid, glowing blue.

On the desk tablet, the numbers suddenly reversed. The screen flashed violently from green to deep, warning crimson.

SYSTEM ERROR: PROTOCOL ZERO REJECTED. UNAUTHORIZED ACCESSED DETECTED. TREASURY ASSETS REROUTED TO HOLDING VAULT 0-A.

Julian’s composure shattered. He snatched the tablet, his fingers flying across the glass screen in a frantic attempt to override the system. "What did you do?! What is this?!"

"My father didn't hide the master key with me because I was weak, Julian," Mariana said coldly, walking right up to him. "He hid it with me because I was the only one smart enough to know Gabriel would come for it."

She looked straight into the hidden camera lens embedded in Julian’s lapel pin—knowing Gabriel was watching the live feed from wherever he was hiding.

"Hello, Gabriel," Mariana spoke directly to the camera. "Did you really think I didn't notice the offshore accounts funding Andrew's company three years ago? Did you think I didn't trace the shell corporations back to your front men in Singapore? I stayed in that mansion with the Morrisons for four years not because I was trapped..."

She leaned in close to the lapel pin.

"...but because I needed a secure, unmonitored location away from Escalante Tower to build the trap that would draw you out of the shadows."

Julian backed away, his face pale as paper. "You... you knew?"

"I let Andrew slap me last night," Mariana whispered, her voice laced with absolute venom. "I let his mother mock me. I let them think they had broken me. Because an Escalante stepping out of the gates in anger is believable. An Escalante playing a master stroke out of nowhere raises suspicion. You needed me to react. And I gave you the exact performance you paid for."

The double doors of the penthouse burst open.

This time, it wasn't the police.

It was Gabriel’s private security detail—six heavily armed men in unmarked tactical gear. But standing right in front of them, handcuffed and flanked by federal marshals, was Andrew Morrison.

Andrew looked utterly destroyed, his eyes bloodshot, his suit torn. He looked up, seeing Mariana standing tall and untouched, and then looked at Julian.

"You..." Andrew stammered, realization crashing down on him like a tidal wave. "You told me... you said if I got rid of her, Escalante Global would buy out my debt..."

"Shut up, you idiot!" Julian snarled.

"Take him," a stern voice commanded from the hallway.

A senior federal agent stepped into the penthouse, displaying a high-level warrant. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, grand larceny, and conspiracy. As for Gabriel Escalante..." The agent held up a tracking device. "His signal was traced the moment the Protocol Zero override was triggered. SWAT is raiding his compound in Zurich right now."

Julian sank into the executive chair, his head in his hands. The entire grand scheme, five years in the making, had collapsed in less than five minutes.

Andrew fell to his knees again, tears streaming down his face. "Mariana... please... I didn't know... they manipulated me! I still love you!"

Mariana didn't even grant him a glance. She walked past him as if he were nothing more than a stain on the floor.

"Take them all away," she ordered softly.
