I told him police and lawyers still needed photographs.

He looked devastated.

“Grandma’s dresses are still there?”

“Yes.”

“Mr. Chomp’s bed?”

“He never had a bed.”

“He sleeps next to me.”

“Right.”

He smiled slightly.

Then showed me the drawing I carried from the room.

“Dad said throw it away.”

“What?”

“The dinosaur picture.”

“Why?”

“He said Grandma needs clean walls.”

Ryan had participated actively.

Not merely allowed.

“Did Dad pack your things?”

Ethan nodded.

“Some.”

My chest hurt.
