Chapter 1 - The Magic of the Coral Kingdom

In the deepest trenches of the Aquamarine Sea, where the sunlight faded into a pale, ethereal blue twilight, lies the Coral Kingdom of Orena. For thousands of years, the survival of this kingdom did not depend on spears of silver or walls of stone; it depended entirely on the magic of the siren’s voice. The song of a mermaid was the breath of the ocean. It was their voices that commanded the warm currents to flow, coaxed the giant kelp forests to bloom, and raised protective barriers of shimmering light against the monstrous leviathans that slumbered in the dark abyss below.
Among the young sirens of Orena, Lyra possessed the most gifted gift. Her voice was not a weapon, but a sanctuary. When Lyra sang, the wild, unpredictable whirlpools would quiet down into glassy pools, and the nocturnal jellyfish would glow with a brilliant, golden bioluminescence that illuminated the dark reef like a field of floating stars. Her scales were a shifting palette of silver and soft seafoam green, and her hair flowed behind her in long, iridescent waves that seemed to hold the color of the deep water itself.
"Your song is the pulse of the reef, Lyra," the Arch-Weaver, an ancient merman with a beard of tangled sea-grass, had told her during the midsummer solstice. "Never forget that a siren’s voice is not her own; it is the thread that keeps the sea from unraveling."

Lyra loved her duty. She spent her days swimming through the great coral arches, singing the verses of growth to the anemones and weaving melodies of peace through the migratory whale lanes. Her life was a continuous, beautiful song, shared with her sister mermaids under the watchful eye of the silver moon that pulled the tides from above.
But two weeks before the great lunar eclipse, a strange, freezing current crawled into the kingdom from the Forbidden Trenches. The whales grew silent, and the coral began to turn a brittle, pale white. Lyra sat on her favorite shelf of purple brain coral, her hands resting on her silver tail, feeling a cold weight settle in her chest. She opened her mouth to sing the song of healing to the dying reef, but before the first note could leave her throat, a dark, shifting shadow detached itself from the rocky wall behind her. It was an embrace colder than ice, and as it wrapped around her throat, the world went completely dark.
