Chapter 2 - The Silence in the Throat

When Lyra opened her eyes, the golden light of her grotto had vanished, replaced by the grim, dim green of the deep current. Her throat burned with a white-hot, stabbing pain, as if she had swallowed a handful of crushed sea-glass. She sat up quickly, her fingers instantly flying to her neck.

Her skin was cold. Where the vibrant, glowing vocal scales used to be, there was now only a dull, dead grey patch, shaped like a closed fist.

Lyra panicked. She opened her mouth, her chest rising and falling as she tried to summon the comforting, resonant melody of the tide-song. She pushed the air from her lungs, expecting the beautiful, liquid notes that usually filled the cavern.

Nothing came out. Not a song. Not a whisper. Not even a breath.

The silence that followed was terrifying. It was a hollow, heavy vacuum that pressed down on her ears. In the Coral Kingdom, to lose one's voice was not just a medical tragedy; it was a severe spiritual exile. Without her song, Lyra could no longer communicate with the reef. She could no longer feel the hum of the ocean's magic, and her silver scales had already begun to lose their pearlescent luster, turning a dry, chalky grey near the fins.

"Lyra!" her sister, Aria, swam into the grotto, her face pale with concern as she held a cluster of glowing amber pearls. "The southern barrier has collapsed! The deep monsters are moving toward the nursery reef! The Arch-Weaver says we need your song to—"

Aria stopped, her eyes widening as she saw Lyra clutching her grey, silent throat. She dropped the pearls, which scattered across the sandy floor like dying sparks.

"Your voice," Aria whispered, her hands shaking as she touched Lyra's face. "It's gone. Who did this to you?"

Lyra could only shake her head, tears of pure, silent frustration floating into the water around her. She swam to a smooth wall of black silt, using her sharp fingernail to scratch two words into the dark stone: The Shadow.
