Chapter 2 - THE MAN ON THE PHONE

The faint glow from the smartphone screen reflected in Emily’s wide, terror-stricken eyes. The air inside the luxury SUV seemed to instantly drop to absolute zero. Matthew Lawson’s sharp eyes caught the sudden, rigid shift in her posture. He looked down at the phone, then back at her pale face, which had lost all of its color. He knew instantly that she had seen the name.

Emily pressed herself hard against the passenger door, her hand instinctively reaching for the handle as if she were ready to leap out into the street at a hundred kilometers an hour, directly into the raging storm.

"You... you're with her," Emily choked out, her voice trembling violently with a mixture of betrayal and absolute despair. "You pretended to rescue me just to hand me over to them quietly, didn't you? Let me out! Let me out right now!"

Matthew remained disturbingly calm. He reached over, picked up the phone, and flipped it face down on the console—a decisive action, yet entirely devoid of violence.

"If I were with her, Emily, you would currently be in handcuffs on your way back to the estate, not sitting in the back of my car," Matthew replied coldly, his eyes turning back to the road ahead.

"Sir!" the driver, Marcus, suddenly broke in, his voice tight with tension as he glanced at the rearview mirror. "We’ve got two high-end black SUVs closing in fast behind us. They're trying to box us in against the guardrail. It's the Harper guards!"

Emily looked back through the rain-streaked rear window. Through the blinding sheets of water, the headlights of the pursuing vehicles looked like the piercing eyes of predatory beasts closing in for the kill. Vanessa was not going to let her slip away so easily.

"Lose them," Matthew commanded smoothly, his tone completely flat, as if being hunted through a midnight storm was nothing more than a mundane event in his schedule.

Marcus gripped the steering wheel, slammed his foot onto the accelerator, and shifted gears. The massive SUV roared fiercely and surged forward. The trailing vehicles answered instantly, accelerating and ramming violently into Matthew's bumper. Emily screamed, losing her footing and nearly flying forward, but Matthew’s powerful arm shot out, catching her by the shoulder to steady her against the leather seat.

"Hold on," he growled under his breath.

Marcus swung the steering wheel hard, executing a dangerous drift around a narrow, flooded bend leading into an abandoned shipyard warehouse district. The heavy SUV slid across the slick asphalt, kicking up a massive wall of blinding water that completely choked out the visibility of their pursuers. Capitalizing on those crucial seconds, Marcus killed the headlights entirely and turned the vehicle sharply into a pitch-black, cavernous warehouse.

The two Harper SUVs roared past the intersection outside, their headlights cutting through the rain before disappearing down the distant highway. They had lost the trail.

Inside the dark warehouse, the deafening sound of rain drumming against the corrugated tin roof created an oppressive, haunting atmosphere. Emily clutched her shoulders, a quiet, broken sob escaping her lips in the cramped space. She was exhausted, battered, and utterly blind to what her destiny held.

"I told you, I don't work for Vanessa," Matthew broke the silence, reaching into the front seat to grab a dark wool trench coat and gently draping it over her shivering shoulders.

"Then why is her name on your phone?" Emily turned her tear-streaked face toward him, her voice dripping with skepticism. "In this city, who doesn't know that you're the elite financial consultant pulling the strings behind half of the Harper Corporation's major deals?"

Matthew remained silent for a long moment. Under the dim, green luminescence of the dashboard, his face revealed a deep, solemn shadow that had never appeared in any financial magazine. He looked at her, his sharp gaze suddenly softening into a complex mixture of guilt, resolve, and old memories.

"Because she has no idea what the real connection is between me and your father," Matthew said, pacing his words deliberately. "Ten years ago, when I was nothing but a broke, desperate nobody being hunted by loan sharks at these exact docks, it was Arthur Harper who risked his money and his reputation to save my life. He gave me the foundation to stand where I am today."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. "My father...?"

"Yes. And I made a sacred vow to him before his crash," Matthew said, leaning closer, his voice low but carrying the weight of an anchor. "He knew that if he ever passed, and the Harper Corporation fell into the wrong hands, I would step out of the shadows to protect you—at all costs. I only accepted Vanessa's consultancy three years ago to monitor her from the inside and wait for this exact night. Emily, you didn't escape that hellhole alone. I am here to help you take back everything they stole from you."
