Chapter 4 - HUNTED

The blinding white smoke of the tear gas was replaced by the sting of cold rain as Emily and Matthew tumbled out of the motel window and into the narrow, brick-lined alleyway below. Emily’s ankle flared with agony, but Matthew didn't let her stall. He gripped her upper arm tightly, practically lifting her off her feet as they sprinted over the wet cobblestones of Charleston's historic district.

Behind them, the muffled, rhythmic pft-pft-pft of silenced gunfire chipped away at the historic brick walls, showering them with red dust and mortar fragments.

"In here!" Matthew hissed, throwing his shoulder against a rusted iron gate that led into a dark, subterranean maintenance corridor beneath a row of old King Street boutiques.

They scrambled inside, Matthew slamming the gate shut and jamming a heavy steel rebar through the handles just as a heavy body threw itself against the exterior. The metal groaned, but it held.

Emily slumped against the damp concrete wall, gasping for air, her lungs still burning from the gas. "Those... those weren't Vanessa's corporate security guards," she panted, looking up at Matthew in the dim, amber utility light. "Vanessa's men wear branded tactical gear. They move like ex-cops. These men... they didn't say a word. They didn't even try to show a badge."

Matthew was busy checking the chamber of a compact firearm he had pulled from his inner jacket pocket. His jaw was set, a grim, lethal intensity in his eyes. "You're learning fast, Emily. No, they don't belong to Vanessa."

"Then who are they?!" she cried out, the sound echoing hollowly down the concrete tunnel. "Vanessa wants me alive to sign the blocker shares over to Bennett! Those men were shooting to kill!"

"They belong to a secondary tier," Matthew explained, his voice dropping into a low, chilling register as he signaled her to keep moving down the corridor. "A shadow board of international investors who have been covertly funding the Harper Corporation’s domestic logistics expansions for the last five years. They don't give a damn about Vanessa’s petty greed or Bennett’s harbor project."

Emily stumbled alongside him, her mind racing faster than her heartbeat. "If they don't care about the company, why are they hunting me?"

"Because Vanessa is sloppy," Matthew said flatly, keeping his weapon raised as they approached a heavy metal exit door at the end of the tunnel. "She panicked when you escaped, and she made calls on unsecured lines. These investors realized that I had pulled you out of the estate. They know that if you live long enough to uncover the true financial records your father left behind, the entire multi-billion-dollar money-laundering network they built through Harper Corporation will be exposed to the federal government."

He stopped at the door, turning his head to look directly into her eyes. The gravity in his gaze was suffocating.

"To Vanessa, you are a pawn to be married off. But to them, Emily, you are an existential threat. They don't want you alive to sign anything. They don't want you to speak. They want you dead, your father's line entirely erased, so their secrets stay buried in the dark forever."

Before Emily could process the weight of his words, Matthew threw the exit door open. They stepped out into a dimly lit subterranean parking garage beneath a historic archive building. Waiting in the shadows was a nondescript silver sedan, its engine already purring silently. Marcus sat behind the wheel, his face pale as he unlocked the doors.

"We have to move, sir," Marcus urged as they scrambled into the back seat. "The local police scanners are already lit up. Someone is pulling string at the state level to flag this vehicle."

Matthew slammed the door shut, and the sedan roared out of the garage, breaking back into the relentless downpour of the Charleston morning. Emily stared out the rain-streaked window, realizing with a sickening jolt that the world she thought she knew was completely gone. She wasn't just running from a cruel stepmother anymore; she was running from an invisible empire that owned the very ground she was stepping on.
