Chapter 9 - QUEEN OF LIES

The rain had escalated into a savage downpour by the time the silver sedan pulled into the subterranean service bay of the Harper Corporation headquarters. The sixty-story glass monolith was completely surrounded by satellite news vans and police cruisers, their flashing blue-and-red strobes casting a chaotic, rhythmic pulse against the wet asphalt.

Inside the service elevator, the tension was thick enough to suffocate. Emily stood perfectly still, staring at her reflection in the polished steel doors. She no longer looked like the terrified girl who had plunged through a bathroom window into the mud. She wore a pristine, midnight-blue silk gown that Marcus had procured—a sharp contrast to the stark white bandage wrapping her scraped hands beneath the long sleeves.

Matthew stood beside her, checking the digital feed on his tablet. He had shed his heavy trench coat, appearing in a flawless, tailored tuxedo. His demeanor was entirely calm, but the lethal glint in his eyes signaled that the trap was fully set.

"The main ballroom on the top floor is packed," Matthew said, his low voice cutting through the mechanical hum of the elevator. "Vanessa just finished her opening address. She’s currently sitting at the head VIP table with Richard Bennett and the network executives. Marcus has successfully spliced my laptop into the master AV override room. Once we step out, the broadcast is ours."

Emily turned to look at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. "And Clara?"

"Marcus tracked her security detail. She’s being held in your father’s old executive office suite on the floor below the ballroom," Matthew assured her, reaching out to give her hand a firm, grounding squeeze. "The moment the chaos starts up there, Marcus moves in to get her out."

The elevator chimed, the digital display flashing Floor 60. The heavy steel doors slid open, immediately flooding the elevator cabin with the swell of classical orchestral music, the clinking of crystal champagne flutes, and the low, aristocratic hum of Charleston’s elite.

They slipped through the heavy velvet curtains at the back of the grand ballroom, completely unnoticed by the hundreds of guests whose eyes were fixed on the central stage. At the main podium stood Vanessa, holding a diamond-encrusted microphone, her face a flawless mask of tragic, elegant resilience as she spoke to a wall of live television cameras.

"—and so, despite the profound heartbreak my family is enduring tonight with the tragic disappearance of my stepdaughter, the Harper Corporation will continue to stand firm," Vanessa declared into the microphones, her voice trembling with perfectly manufactured sorrow. "We ask for your continued prayers for Emily's safe recovery, and we assure our investors that our logistics lines remain entirely secure under the guidance of Mr. Richard Bennett."

From the back row of the gallery, Richard Bennett offered a polite, greasy nod, raising his champagne glass toward the media cameras.

"The only thing secure in this building, Vanessa, is the evidence of your crimes!"

Emily’s voice rang out across the vast, acoustic space like a gunshot.

The orchestral music screeched to an immediate halt. A collective, deafening gasp rippled through the hundreds of elite guests as the crowd parted like the Red Sea. Flashbulbs exploded in a violent, blinding frenzy as every single news camera pivoted away from the stage to lock onto the young woman marching down the center aisle.

Vanessa’s face instantly drained of all color, her aristocratic composure shattering into raw, naked panic. "Security!" she shrieked into the microphone, her voice cracking over the PA system. "Remove her immediately! She is mentally unstable! She is dangerous!"

"Let them try," Matthew said calmly, stepping into the light beside Emily. He raised his hand, pointing a small black digital detonator toward the massive, sixty-foot projector screen behind the stage.

With a single click, the corporate logo vanished.

The screen flashed to life with a blinding white light, replaced instantly by a high-definition, legally certified display of the True Will and Testament of Arthur Harper, bearing the pristine digital verification of the late Mr. Abernathy. Before the crowd could even process the document, the screen fractured into a sprawling, color-coded ledger—revealing the systematic, two-billion-dollar embezzlement scheme and the offshore routing numbers tied directly to Vanessa Harper and Richard Bennett.

The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos. Journalists scrambled toward the stage, their microphones raised, shouting questions over the din.

"Mrs. Harper, is that the real will?" "Mr. Bennett, are these your personal offshore routing codes?"

Richard Bennett took one look at the federal compliance warnings flashing on the screen and violently shoved a reporter out of his way. "I had nothing to do with this!" Bennett roared toward the cameras, turning on Vanessa instantly to save his own skin. "She forged the documents! She managed the logistics accounts! I only structured the international shipping portfolios! I didn't know she murdered Arthur!"

"You sniveling coward!" Vanessa screamed, completely abandoning her elegant facade as she lunged toward Bennett.

But before the security guards or the press could move, the building's master fire alarms began to howl a deafening warning. The crystal chandeliers flickered twice, and the entire top floor was suddenly plunged into a suffocating, pitch-black darkness as the main power grid failed.
