Chapter 6 - THE BILLION DOLLAR LIE

The metallic tang of blood and the smell of ozone filled the cramped archive vault. The mercenary in the gray coat stepped further into the room, his weapon scanning the shadows.
Matthew didn't hesitate. He grabbed a heavy metal fire extinguisher from the wall bracket, pulled the pin with a fierce yank, and hurled it directly at the concrete floor near the doorway while firing a single blind shot from his compact weapon. The bullet struck the extinguisher's valve, causing it to explode in a violent, blinding cloud of white chemical retardant.
Amidst the sudden chaos and the mercenary’s muffled coughing, Matthew grabbed Emily by her waist, hauling her toward an old coal chute exit at the back of the boiler room. He shoved her up the metal rungs first. Emily scrambled through the narrow opening, scraping her hands against the iron, before bursting out into a rainy alleyway. Matthew dropped down right behind her, and they dove into the silver sedan just as Marcus slammed his foot onto the gas, leaving the squealing tires of their pursuers echoing in the dark.
Two hours later, they were holed up in a desolate, abandoned warehouse in the industrial district on the outskirts of Charleston. Rain beat a relentless, deafening tattoo against the corrugated aluminum roof.
Matthew sat at a rusted metal desk, plugging the heavy steel USB drive into an encrypted, military-grade laptop. The screen flickered, casting a cold, blue light over his grim expression. Within seconds, rows of encrypted folders began to decompress, revealing thousands of corporate banking spreadsheets, wire routing numbers, and hidden communication logs.
"This is the scale of the deception, Emily," Matthew said, his voice tight as he turned the screen toward her. "Your stepmother didn't just steal the company name. Look at these ledgers."
Emily leaned over his shoulder, her eyes widening as she scanned the digital documents. The numbers were staggering.
The Embezzlement: Over the course of three years, Vanessa had systematically siphoned over two billion dollars out of the Harper Corporation's legitimate domestic accounts.
The Laundering Hub: Every single dollar was routed through a complex network of shell companies managed directly by Richard Bennett. He was using the Harper Corporation's international logistics and shipping lines to launder money for global chemical syndicates.
The Ultimate Target: Emily's name appeared at the bottom of the master corporate charter.
"You are the largest legal shareholder of the Harper Corporation," Matthew revealed, looking up at her. "Your father tied the core land assets and shipping berths directly to your latent blocker shares. Vanessa and Bennett can route the money, but they cannot liquidate or legally sell the infrastructure without your signature."
"That's why she tried to force the marriage," Emily whispered, a chill running down her spine as the puzzle pieces slammed into place. "If I married Richard Bennett, my blocker shares would automatically merge into his portfolio by law."
"Exactly," Matthew nodded grimly. "Vanessa would get her final multi-million-dollar buyout to flee the country, Bennett would gain absolute, permanent control of the laundering lines, and you would have disappeared into a private medical facility, silenced forever."
Emily stared at the screen, her stomach turning. Her father's murder, her three years of psychological torture, and the brutal execution of Mr. Abernathy had all been orchestrated for these columns of digital zeros.
Suddenly, the laptop screen flickered violently. A bright red alert banner flashed across the decryption software, signaling a forced external breach. At the exact same second, Matthew’s personal smartphone on the table buzzed with an incoming text from an untraceable, encrypted number.

Emily reached out, picking up the device before Matthew could grab it. The anonymous message on the screen read:
“Ask Matthew about his original contract from 2021. He’s a very good actor, Emily. But he forgot to mention who paid for his first luxury penthouse.”
