THE 30-SECOND LIE / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - THE OUTCASTS

By lunchtime, Leo couldn't bring himself to face the cafeteria. He took his untouched brown-paper lunch bag and hid in the furthest corner of the school library, sitting at a dusty wooden table hidden behind the outdated encyclopedia stacks. He stared at his phone. He had eighteen missed calls from his mother and an official email from Principal Higgins requesting a mandatory disciplinary hearing tomorrow morning. Expulsion was no longer a possibility; it was a countdown.

"Hey."

Leo jumped, nearly knocking over his water bottle.

Standing at the edge of the stack was Maya Lin. She was the editor-in-chief of the Sherwood Ledger, the school’s digital student blog. Maya was known for her stubbornness, her sharp leather jackets, and an annoying habit of asking questions that made the school administration incredibly uncomfortable. Behind her stood Sam Patel, a lanky junior who practically lived in the computer lab and wore faded graphic tees with obscure programming jokes.

"Leave me alone, Maya," Leo said, his voice raw. "I’m not giving your blog a statement. Just let me pack my things in peace."

"I’m not here for a statement, Leo," Maya said quietly, taking a seat across from him without asking. Sam slumped into the chair next to her, adjusting his thick-rimmed glasses. Maya leaned forward, her dark eyes intense. "I’m here because that video is absolute garbage."

Leo blinked, caught completely off guard. "What?"

"I’ve watched that thirty-second clip fifty times on a loop," Sam chimed in, opening a sleek, sticker-covered laptop on the table. "The audio syncing is off by three milliseconds right before you throw the punch. The background noise ambient level drops suddenly, and the frame rate shifts from 30fps to 24fps for just a fraction of a second. It’s a classic stitch job, Leo. The video was edited. Professionally."

"It doesn't matter," Leo muttered, his gaze falling back to his hands. "Nobody cares about frame rates, Sam. They see Marcus bleeding, and they see me hitting him. The school board doesn't care about video editing. They care about public relations. I’m going to lose my scholarship. My mom... she can't afford to send me anywhere else."

Maya reached across the table, her hand firm on his arm. "It does matter. Someone went out of their way to ruin your life, Leo. They targeted you because you're quiet and you don't have a wealthy family to threaten lawsuits. If we find the original, unedited footage, we can prove Marcus wasn't the victim."

Leo looked from Maya’s fierce, determined face to Sam’s reassuring nod. For the last fourteen hours, he felt like he was drowning in a dark ocean of digital hatred. But looking at them, a tiny, fragile spark of hope flickered in his chest.

"Why are you doing this for me?" Leo asked softly. "Everyone else hates me."

"Because I hate fake news," Maya said with a sharp, dangerous smile. "And because bullies shouldn't get to win just because they have a higher follower count. Are you in?"

Leo wiped a stray tear from his cheek, tightened his jaw, and finally nodded. "Yeah. I’m in."
