Chapter 7 - THE BREAKTHROUGH

The monitor screen flashed a dull green as the encrypted server log finally unraveled. Sam’s fingers froze over the mechanical keyboard. The hum of the cooling fans in the garage felt incredibly loud in the sudden silence.
"I’m in," Sam whispered, his eyes scanning the lines of administrative code. "Friday afternoon, 5:15 PM. Computer station number four."
Maya leaned in so close her nose almost touched the glass. "Give me a name, Sam. Tell me it’s Jax."
Sam shook his head, a look of profound confusion crossing his face. "It’s not Jax. The login credentials belong to a student account that wasn't even at the gym during the fight. It belongs to Chloe Vance."
Leo blinked, stunned. "Chloe? Marcus’s cousin? The school’s star Instagram influencer? Why would she upload a video that makes her own cousin look like a victim, but then scrub the data?"
"Wait," Maya said, her investigative instincts kicking into overdrive. "Chloe isn't just his cousin; she manages Marcus’s social media presence. She’s the one who curated his 'golden boy' persona online. If Marcus got into a fight and lost, it would ruin his pristine reputation for the college scouts. But if he was attacked by a 'dangerous charity case'..."
"It turns a PR disaster into a victim narrative," Sam finished the thought, his eyes widening. "She didn't just upload it to bully Leo. She did it to protect Marcus's brand. But to do that, she needed the raw footage."
"Which means," Leo said, hope rising in his throat for the first time in days, "the original, unedited video must be somewhere on her device or her cloud storage."
Sam grinned, a dangerous, brilliant expression. "Chloe uses the school’s automated media server to back up her photography class assignments. If she brought the original video to school to edit it on their software... it might still be sitting in the server’s automated temporary cache."
Sam’s fingers became a blur. He bypassed three firewalls, digging deep into the school's discarded data dumps. For twenty agonizing minutes, nobody breathed. Then, a progress bar appeared.

The video opened with the same low-angle view, but this time, it started two minutes earlier. The audio was crystal clear. It showed Marcus and Jax cornering Leo against the old bleachers. It showed Marcus shoving Leo first, spitting insults about his family, and pulling a heavy silver chain out of his pocket to wrap around his knuckles. The video showed Marcus swinging first, aiming directly for Leo’s temple. Leo’s right hook wasn't an assault; it was a desperate, split-second act of survival.
"We have it," Maya whispered, tears of relief springing to her eyes. "We actually have it."
