Chapter 2: The Gravity of Malice

Chapter 2: The Gravity of Malice
The space between the two women felt entirely devoid of air. Charlotte’s eyes narrowed into thin, lethal slits, the calm mask on her face finally fracturing into a look of sharp, dangerous desperation. The ten-billion-dollar partnership with the Hepburn defense enterprise was closing tomorrow morning at nine sharp. If Julian discovered his own sister was draining the company’s infrastructure liquidity to cover her personal offshore gambling debts, she wouldn't just be fired—she would be destroyed.

"I said, give it to me!" Charlotte hissed, lunging forward with a sudden, controlled speed.
Her hands snapped out like a trap, her fingers clawing at the edges of the rolled white document clutched against Victoria’s chest. Victoria pulled back instinctively, twisting her upper body away to shield the papers and her stomach from the sudden, unexpected aggression. She had never seen Charlotte show physical violence; the sheer shock of the movement froze her tongue.
"Charlotte, stop!" Victoria gasped, her foot catching on the long, flowing hem of her sparkly white gown.
The fabric, heavy with thousands of tiny hand-stitched crystals, tangled around her ankles. In the brief, frantic scramble for the document, Victoria’s heel slid backward against the highly polished marble edge of the interior balcony. There was no friction, no grip. She lost her footing completely. Her lower back struck the low, black wrought-iron railing, and the momentum carried her upper body backward over the edge.

Time seemed to slow to a brutal, agonizing crawl. Victoria’s fingers brushed desperately against the cold, dark metal of the railing, trying to find a grip, trying to fight the terrifying pull of gravity. But the smooth, polished iron slipped from her sweat-slicked palms.

Charlotte reached out, her face freezing in a sudden, paralyzed shock as she realized she had pushed the pregnant woman over the threshold. Her hand hung in the empty air, inches away from Victoria’s sparkling sleeve, just a fraction of a second too late. There was no triumph in Charlotte’s face now, only the hollow, freezing realization of what she had done.
Victoria fell backward into the open expanse of the grand lobby, a silent gasp of absolute terror escaping her lips as the world turned upside down, the high ceiling and the massive chandeliers spinning away into the darkness.
