Chapter 4: The Slide on the Marble

Chapter 4: The Slide on the Marble

From the grand study on the ground floor, the sound of a distant, heavy scuffle and the sudden rushing of air had already alerted Julian Sterling. He had been reviewing the final clauses of the Hepburn contract, his mind focused, but his instincts had always been highly tuned to his wife’s movements.

Julian was in his early 30s, possessing a warm but strong facial structure and dark, neatly styled hair. He wore a well-fitted grey three-piece suit, a black dress shirt, and a solid dark tie—the uniform of a man who ruled a multibillion-dollar real estate empire.

He burst through the heavy oak study doors into the grand lobby just as Victoria’s falling form cleared the second-tier staircase.

Panic exploded in Julian's chest, a blinding, white-hot terror that threatened to paralyze him. But his movements remained perfectly controlled, driven by the raw, lethal instinct of a man protecting his entire world. He didn't hesitate. He didn't shout. He ran with a sprinting speed across the polished white marble floor, his eyes locked entirely on his falling wife.

As Victoria reached the final ten feet of her descent, Julian threw his body forward, skidding hard on his knees across the slick marble surface like a baseball player sliding for home plate. His arms outstretched, he slid directly beneath her falling form, his back arching to catch her.

The impact was loud, a heavy, breathless thud of flesh against flesh as Julian caught Victoria safely against his chest, absorbing the entire force of the fall with his own upper body and thighs. The momentum of the slide made both of them lean back sharply against the marble, Julian’s strong arms locking around her waist to ensure her head didn't strike the stone. They skidded three feet across the polished floor before coming to a dead stop.

The rolled-up thick white legal document slipped from Victoria’s limp grip, landing softly on the marble a few feet away, its pages unfurling slightly, its secrets exposed to the quiet room.
