Chapter 29: Driftwood

She breached the surface, gasping for air, choking on saltwater. Debris from the chopper rained down around her in the black water. She managed to grab hold of a buoyant seat cushion, wrapping her broken fingers around the foam.

She drifted. The storm raged on, but she could barely feel it. Her blood was mixing with the ocean, leaving a dark, ephemeral trail in her wake. She had won. Julian was dead. Vanguard’s servers were buried. But the cost was absolute. There was no going back to the cottage. There was no 'Elena'.
