Chapter 30: A Beautifully Blank Future

The storm began to break as dawn approached, replacing the violent rain with a thick, impenetrable white fog. The ocean went dead calm, a glassy, silent expanse.

Elena lay on the debris, staring up at the gray sky. She could no longer feel her legs or her arms. The pain had finally, blissfully stopped.

A seagull cried out in the distance. The fog rolled over her, thick and suffocating, erasing the horizon, erasing the cliffs, erasing the world. She closed her eyes. She had wanted a future that was beautifully blank, unwritten by the hands of the Thornes or the ghosts of her past.

As the fog swallowed her entirely, leaving nothing but the sound of the gently lapping waves, she realized she had finally found it. Whether she would wake up on a distant shore, or simply slip beneath the surface forever, was a question the fog refused to answer.

It was, in the end, perfectly blank.
