Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the System

The safehouse was a secluded cabin tucked deep in the Pine Barrens, miles away from any paved road. Marcus had set it up years ago during his time with the department, and it remained completely off the grid. Inside, the air smelled of aged cedar and gun oil.

After ensuring Lily and Tommy were bathed, fed, and sleeping peacefully in the back bedroom under Marcus’s heavy tactical jacket, I joined my brother in the living room. Maps, encrypted drives, and old case files were already spread across the wooden table.

"If Sarah was targeted, it means someone inside the system leaked her identity," Marcus said, tapping a red marker against a printout of an old court transcript. "When she testified against the Moretti syndicate six years ago, three high-ranking lieutenants went down. But the head of the operation—a ghost named Victor Vance—was never caught."

"Vance?" I looked up, astonished. "Her last name was Vance. Marcus, was she related to him?"

Marcus hesitated before nodding grimly. "Victor Vance is her uncle. Sarah wasn't just a DOJ forensic accountant; she was the insider who betrayed her own bloodline to tear down his criminal empire. When she ran, she took the 'Black Ledger'—an encrypted hard drive containing every offshore account, corrupt politician, and shell company Victor owned."

My stomach churned. The woman I had spent six years building a life with, the gentle mother who cried at sad commercials, was a former federal informant who had dismantled a billionaire crime lord's empire.

"Where is the ledger now?" I asked, my fists clenching tightly.

"She hid it," Marcus replied, plugging Sarah's cracked phone into an analytical deck. "And if my hunch is right, the location is hidden in a code that only you or the children would understand."

Suddenly, the analytical deck chimed. The cracked screen of Sarah’s phone flickered, and a hidden partition unlocked, revealing a single audio file recorded four days ago—the night before I returned home.

Marcus hit play. Sarah’s trembling, hushed voice filled the silent room.

"Richard... if you are listening to this, it means I failed to keep them safe from my past. I am so sorry for lying to you. Everything about my love for you and our children was real. They found me, Richard. Victor's men traced my old medical records through Tommy’s birth certificate. I am taking the ledger to where we first said 'forever'. Don't come for me, Richard. Take the kids and run."

The message cut off with the sound of a heavy door crashing open in the background, followed by a muffled struggle before total silence.

I stared at the speaker, tears stinging my eyes, but my resolve hardened into steel.

"Where we first said 'forever,'" I whispered.

"What does that mean, Rich?" Marcus asked, leaning in.

"The old lighthouse on Blackwood Point," I said, looking my brother dead in the eye. "It’s where I proposed to her. She didn't destroy the ledger... she hid it where she knew I would look if things went wrong. She trusted me to find it."
