Chapter 6 - Pier 42

Midnight. Fog rolled heavy across the industrial harbor of Pier 42, thick enough to swallow the towering cranes and rusted shipping containers in ghost-like silhouettes.
I walked down the central alleyway between two rows of steel containers, my hands visible, the cold wind whipping my jacket. Marcus was positioned high on a crane three hundred yards out, scoped rifle trained on the meeting point.
At the end of the pier, beneath a single flickering sodium light, stood three black SUVs. Four armed men in dark suits flanked a wheelchair bound, older man with cold, piercing blue eyes and a scar running from his ear to his jaw.
Beside him, bound to a steel chair with heavy duct tape over her mouth and bruises staining her cheekbones, was Sarah.
When her eyes met mine, a stifled sob escaped her throat. She shook her head wildly, silently pleading with me to leave.
"Richard Vance... or should I say, the auditor," Victor Vance’s voice was smooth, carrying the chill of ice despite his age. "You’ve brought my life's work back to me."
"Let her go, Victor," I called out, stopping twenty paces away. "You have the kids' mother. You've terrorized my family. You want the drive? Take it and let us walk."
Victor chuckled, a dry, raspy sound. "You think this is just about money? Your wife destroyed my life. She put my sons in federal prison. She stripped me of my legacy. I don't just want the drive, Richard. I want her to watch everything she built crumble, just like I did."
Victor gestured to his lead enforcer, a towering man who stepped forward and drew a silenced pistol, aiming it directly at Sarah’s forehead.
"Hand over the drive, Richard," Victor ordered. "Or she dies right now, and my men go back to your house to finish what they started with the children."

My blood ran cold. The threat against Lily and Tommy shattered every trace of fear left in my body.
"Marcus, NOW!" I screamed.
