Chapter 7 - Crossfire

A deafening shot echoed through the foggy pier as Marcus’s rifle rounds shattered the spotlight above Victor's head, plunging the area into sudden, chaotic darkness.
Before the enforcers could react, I sprinted forward, tackling the lead guard to the concrete floor. We hit the ground hard, the pistol skidding off the edge of the dock into the dark water below. I drove my elbow into his jaw, fueled by pure adrenaline, and ripped myself free, throwing my body over Sarah as gunfire erupted all around us.
"Richard! No!" Sarah cried out as I tore the tape from her mouth and sliced the zip-ties on her wrists with a pocket knife.
"I've got you," I gasped, pulling her down behind a heavy steel shipping crate as bullets sparked against the metal walls. "I've got you, Sarah!"
"The kids... are they..." she wept, clutching my coat frantically.
"They're safe. Marcus took them to a safehouse. They are fine!" I yelled over the deafening cracks of rifle fire.
Across the dock, Marcus was providing cover fire, forcing Victor’s guards back into the shadows. But Victor’s lead lieutenant—a ruthless mercenary named Kravic—was already circling around our crate, automatic weapon raised.
"End of the line, auditor!" Kravic growled, stepping around the corner, his gun trained on my chest.
Before he could pull the trigger, Sarah lunged from behind me with a fallen steel pipe, striking him hard across the knee. Kravic stumbled back with a roar of pain, his shot wildly hitting the sky. I surged forward, driving my shoulder into his chest and pinning him against the edge of the pier.

We struggled violently for control of the weapon. With a final, desperate heave, I twisted his wrist and hurled him over the rusted guardrail. A heavy splash echoed from the dark, freezing sea below, followed by silence.
I turned back to Sarah, breathless, extending my hand. "We have to get to Victor before he escapes!"
