Chapter 5 - Shadow at Blackwood Point

The storm hit its peak as Marcus’s truck coasted to a stop near the rocky cliffs of Blackwood Point. The rain lashed against the windshield in violent sheets, and the ocean roared below like an angry beast. In the distance, the abandoned lighthouse stood like a dark titan against the lightning-streaked sky.

Marcus racked the slide of his sidearm and handed me a secondary tactical flashlight and a heavy iron crowbar. "We don't know if Victor's men swept this place already. Keep your head down."

We crept through the dense salt-spray brush, navigating the slippery rocks until we reached the rusted iron door at the base of the lighthouse. The lock had been cut recently— fresh marks brightened the steel.

"They've been here," Marcus warned in a low hiss, drawing his weapon.

We slipped inside. The interior was freezing, damp, and smelled of rust and decay. Winding spiral stairs stretched up into the darkness above. Step by step, we climbed, every creak of the iron stairs sounding like a gunshot in the silent tower.

When we reached the top glass enclosure—the old lantern room—we found the space completely tossed. Glass display cases were smashed, floorboards pulled up, and dust covered everything.

I swept my flashlight across the floor until the beam caught a small, wooden music box sitting on the central pedestal. It was the music box I had given Sarah on our wedding day.

I rushed over, picking it up. The lock was intact, but the bottom panel had a subtle notch. I pressed the hidden latch, and the false bottom popped open.

Inside lay a heavy, sleek black USB flash drive wrapped in a handwritten note:

"You came. I knew you would. If you hold this, you hold Victor's heart. But he holds mine. The docks, Pier 42. Midnight."

May you like

"It's a trap, Rich," Marcus said, coming up behind me and looking at the note. "He knew you'd come for the ledger. He’s using Sarah as bait."

"It's not a trap," I said, clutching the drive tightly in my hand. "It's a trade. And I'm making it."
