Chapter 4 - THE BLACKLISTThe morning sun had barely cleared the glass towers of the financial district when the foundation of the Rossi empire began to splinter.

Inside the penthouse office of Rossi Chemical Distribution, Hector Rossi—Isabella’s father—stared at his computer screen, his face a ghostly shade of gray. The phone on his desk was ringing incessantly, the red line flashing like a warning beacon.

"What do you mean, the shipping manifests are locked?" Hector roared into the receiver, his expensive silk tie loosened, his hair disheveled. "We have three tankers sitting in the harbor! If that cargo isn't unloaded by noon, we lose the domestic contracts!"

"It’s not just the shipping lines, Mr. Rossi," his chief financial officer replied, his voice shaking through the speaker. "Federal Trust just issued a formal notice. Our revolving line of credit has been frozen effective immediately. They’re citing a sudden compliance risk audit triggered by Vega Logistics. We don't have the liquidity to pay the port fees, Hector. We're completely locked out."

The phone clicked dead.

Hector dropped the receiver, his hands trembling as he turned to look at his daughter. Isabella sat on the leather sofa across from his desk, weeping hysterically, her designer jumpsuit crumpled, her meticulously contoured face ruined by streaks of black mascara.

"Dad, please do something!" Isabella sobbed, clutching her diamond-encrusted wrists. "The police were at my apartment this morning! They had a warrant! My lawyer managed to delay them for a few hours, but they said if I don't turn myself in by noon, they’ll arrest me in public! You have to talk to Mr. Vega!"

"Talk to him?!" Hector screamed, slamming his palms onto the mahogany desk so hard the silver pens rattled. "You absolute fool! You didn't just slap a girl in a boutique, Isabella—you signed the death warrant for this entire family! Do you have any idea who Vega is? He doesn't just do business in this city; he owns the infrastructure we use to breathe!"

Hector marched over to her, his face red with a mixture of terror and fury.

"I spent thirty years building this company, and within twelve hours, your pathetic, arrogant tantrum has reduced it to ash. He pulled our logistics certificates. He froze our credit. By tomorrow morning, Rossi Chemical will be bankrupt, and you will be sitting in a jail cell!"

"I didn't know!" Isabella wailed, covering her face. "She looked so small... she was unsteady... I thought she was nobody!"

"Nobody is 'nobody' when Vega is involved," Hector spat, turning away to grab his coat. "Get up. Fix your face. We are going to the Vega estate right now. You are going to get down on your knees, and you are going to beg for his mercy. Because if you don't, god help us, he will erase us from existence."

Meanwhile, at the Vega estate, the atmosphere was completely serene.

I sat in the sunroom, a soft cashmere blanket draped over my lap, watching the morning light filter through the white rose bushes in the garden. My left arm was bound tightly in a medical sling, and the dull, throbbing ache in my shoulder was managed by the quiet drip of the IV beside my chair.

My father sat across from me, a silver tea tray between us. He was reading a financial report on his tablet, his face completely calm, as if he hadn't spent the night dismantling a multi-million dollar corporation.

"Papa?" I said softly.

He looked up, the hard, lethal edge in his eyes instantly melting into a warmth reserved only for me. "Yes, mi amor?"

"Marcos said the Rossi family is outside the gates," I whispered, looking down at my hands. "They’ve been waiting there for two hours."

Vega set his tablet down on the table with a soft, deliberate click. He reached across the table, his large, warm hand covering my trembling fingers.

"They can wait, Ana," my father said, his voice carrying the absolute weight of a king protecting his throne. "They thought your life had a price tag. Today, they are going to learn that some debts can only be paid in absolute ruin."
