Chapter 8 - THE TRIAL OF PRIVILEGEThe heavy mahogany doors of the courtroom clacked shut, sealing out the media frenzy that had taken over the courthouse steps. Inside, the atmosphere was sterile, quiet, and heavy with the smell of old paper and leather.

Isabella sat at the defense table. The transformation was staggering. Her sleek topknot was replaced by a frizzy, unkempt ponytail, and her face—completely stripped of the high-end makeup and contour she usually wore—looked pale and hollow. She kept staring down at her bare wrists, her fingers twitching where her diamond tennis bracelets used to sit.
Her public defender looked through a thin stack of papers, his expression completely defeated. Every major firm in the city had refused to touch her case out of fear of Vega Global Enterprises.
At the prosecutor's table sat my father. He sat perfectly straight, his eyes cold and unyielding as a pair of stone statues. Beside him, I sat in a sleek, lightweight wheelchair, my arm still bound in its supportive medical sling, a soft knit blanket resting over my weak legs.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance," the bailiff announced.
The courtroom stood as a sharp, severe woman with silver hair stepped up to the bench. She adjusted her glasses, looking down over her desk with absolute authority.
"We are here for the matter of the State versus Isabella Rossi," Judge Vance began, her voice crisp and clear. "The defense has filed a motion to suppress the security footage and the signed confession, citing excessive financial pressure from the victim's family. Counselor, proceed."
Isabella’s public defender stood up, his voice shaking slightly. "Your Honor, my client was subjected to a targeted financial embargo that effectively paralyzed her family's livelihood. The confession was signed under extreme duress, and the public outcry has completely ruined her right to a fair trial."
The prosecutor didn't even stand up to counter. He simply slid a single digital tablet across the bar to the bailiff, who handed it to the judge.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor said smoothly. "The confession was signed in the presence of legal counsel, and the financial actions taken by Vega Logistics were entirely within standard regulatory compliance codes. What you are looking at on that screen is the unedited, high-definition security footage from the boutique."
Judge Vance pressed a button on her desk. On the large screen mounted to the courtroom wall, the video played.
The entire room watched in absolute silence as Isabella's recorded image loomed over me on the screen, her face twisted in a sneer before delivering the brutal, kinetic slap that whipped my head to the side and sent my small frame crashing violently onto the stone floor. The audio captured the heavy, sickening thud of my shoulder hitting the ground, followed by the chaotic clatter of the brass display rack raining down around me.
Then, her recorded voice cut through the courtroom like acid: “This store is worth more than your entire life.”
Isabella buried her face in her hands, sobbing hysterically as the tape played.
Judge Vance watched the screen, her jaw tightening, her eyes hardening into slits of pure ice. She slowly turned the screen off and looked down at the trembling woman at the defense table.
"Motion to suppress is denied," Judge Vance thundered, her gavel cracking against the wooden block like a gunshot. "Privilege is not a shield against cruelty, Ms. Rossi. The evidence against you is not just substantial; it is definitive. The court finds no mitigating circumstances for the brutal, unprovoked assault of a defenseless child."
The judge leaned forward, staring directly into Isabella's terrified eyes.
"For the charge of felony assault on a protected person and malicious negligence, I sentence you to four years at the state correctional facility, with no possibility of early parole. Your family's remaining corporate assets will be placed under a strict restitution lien to cover the full medical and rehabilitative costs of the victim."
"No... please!" Isabella wailed, her voice rising into a sharp, pathetic shriek as two female bailiffs stepped forward to pull her arms behind her back. "Dad! Do something! Please!"
From the back row of the gallery, Hector Rossi didn't even look up. He sat with his head in his hands, completely silent, knowing that any attempt to interfere would mean the total, immediate erasure of whatever little he had left.

The steel handcuffs clicked shut around Isabella's wrists. She was led out through the side door, her rubber slides dragging pathetically against the hardwood floor.
I looked over at my father, who finally let out a slow, quiet breath. He reached down, his large, warm hand catching mine, squeezing it gently. The trial was over, the privilege had failed, and the scales had finally tipped in our favor.
