CHAPTER 6: THE ALPINE TEST

Two weeks later, Veronika organized an exclusive, private retreat at her secluded chalet high in the Swiss Alps. The only guests were Dr. Arthur Vance, a small household staff, and Alex, who acted as the estate manager.

The chalet was situated on a remote mountain peak, accessible only by a private funicular railway or helicopter. Heavy snow began to fall on the second evening, blanketing the jagged peaks in silence and isolating the estate from the rest of the world.

On the third morning, Veronika invited Arthur for a private morning walk along a scenic cliffside trail behind the property. The trail was equipped with discreet, heat-signature cameras hidden within the pine trees—installed by Alex the previous day.

As they walked along the narrow path overlooking a steep vertical drop, a sudden, thunderous roar echoed through the mountains. A controlled, micro-avalanche—triggered remotely by Veronika’s security team higher up the slope—came cascading down the ridge.

Snow and loose debris swept across the trail. Veronika let out a sharp cry and deliberately dropped into a prepared snow-pocket beside a massive granite boulder, wedging her leg beneath a heavy, fallen branch to simulate being trapped.

"Arthur! Help me!" Veronika shouted, her voice trembling as the snow settled around her. "My leg is pinned! I can't move!"

Arthur scrambled backward, gasping for air as the dust cloud cleared. He looked at Veronika, then glanced down the empty trail. The mountain was dead silent. There were no witnesses, no guards, and no cell service due to the storm.

In Arthur’s jacket pocket was a draft of a medical power-of-attorney document Veronika had signed two days prior, granting him temporary medical guardianship in the event she became physically or mentally incapacitated during their private therapy retreat.

Arthur slowly stepped toward her. But instead of reaching down to lift the heavy branch off her leg, he stopped three feet away.

He looked down at the sixty-five-year-old billionaire lying in the freezing snow. His warm, empathetic expression vanished completely, replaced by a cold, calculating stare.

"Arthur... what are you doing?" Veronika whimpered, playing her role to perfection. "Please, pull me out! It's freezing!"

"You know, Veronika," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "you really are a remarkable woman. But you're so tired. You've been fighting for control your entire life. Isn't it time to finally rest?"

"Arthur... please!"

May you like

"If I dig you out now, you'll recover, and eventually, your paranoia will turn on me just like it turned on Alex and Julian," Arthur said softly, stepping back toward the trail. "But if hypothermia takes you out here... the medical power-of-attorney takes effect immediately. Your estate will fall under my psychiatric management, and I will administer your wealth for the rest of my life—in your honor, of course."

Arthur turned his back, straightened his collar, and began walking calmly down the path toward the chalet, leaving her to freeze to death in the wilderness.
