CHAPTER 8: THE SHADOW OF GUILT

With Arthur in police custody, the chalet returned to a heavy, suffocating silence. The storm outside raged on, rattling the glass windows of the grand library.

Alex stood by the fireplace, quietly stoking the flames. The three-month probation period decreed by Veronika was officially ending at midnight. He had watched three men—himself, Julian, and Arthur—fall victim to their own ruthless greed when tempted by Veronika’s vast empire.

"You proved your point, Veronika," Alex said softly, his back turned to her as he held the iron poker. "You proved that true love doesn't exist for someone in your position. We were all monsters. I was just the first one foolish enough to try pushing you out of a helicopter."

Veronika sat in a high-backed leather chair, staring into the flickering fire. "Do you know why I selected you to be my accomplice in these tests, Alex?"

Alex chuckled bitterly. "Because you wanted to humiliate me. You wanted me to watch other men try to destroy you so I would realize how pathetic and unoriginal my own plot was before you locked me away in prison forever."

"No," Veronika said, her tone unexpectedly quiet.

She opened a manila folder resting on the small table beside her chair and laid out several documents.

"When you pushed me out of that helicopter, I hated you," Veronika admitted, her eyes reflecting the warm orange light of the fire. "I wanted you to rot in a cell for the rest of your life. But while you were awaiting trial, my investigators dug into your past. They found out about your mother's terminal heart condition."

Alex froze, his body going completely rigid.

"Of the millions you managed to siphon from my accounts before the wedding," Veronika continued, "you didn't buy sports cars or yachts. You transferred eighty percent of it directly to an offshore medical trust to secure a heart transplant and top-tier ICU care for an ailing old woman. You committed a horrific crime, Alex... but unlike Julian, who wanted money for luxury, or Arthur, who wanted power, you committed your crime out of a desperate, twisted act of love for your mother."

Alex closed his eyes, his knuckles turning white around the iron poker as silent tears streamed down his cheeks.
